Lynch earns PSAC runner-up honor

Rock junior Sarah Lynch and doubles partner Dunja Drmac lost in the semifinal round Sunday

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Slippery Rock University junior Sarah Lynch claimed runner-up honors Sunday in the singles division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships women's tennis competition hosted by Shippensburg University.

The second seed in the singles event, Lynch advanced to the championship match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over unseeded Michele Perez of Bloomsburg but then fell by a 6-2, 6-2 count to top-seeded Anna Pieschi of California in the title match.

Lynch and teammate Dunja Drmac, who is also a junior at SRU, lost Sunday in the semifinal round of the doubles competition. They lost an 8-6 decision to Pieschi and her California partner, Jade Pondicas, the top-seeded tandem and eventual champion.

Lynch and Drmac advanced to the semifinal round with wins Saturday over Perez and her Bloomsburg partner, Emily Palko (8-5) and the Kutztown duo of Chelsea White and Rachel Grula (8-2).

In singles action, Lynch earned a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed, then beat Kutztown's Ridhima Borooah 6-0, 6-s in a second-round match. She conquered fifth-seeded Anastassiya Zherdeva of California by 6-4, 6-3 scores in a quarterfinal match.

Lynch was the only Rock entry to record a victory in singles competition. Drmac lost a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Tabtip Louhabanjong of Indiana (Pa.) and redshirt freshman Elisabeth Yetiskul dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Bloomsburg's Laura Sullivan.

Lynch, Drmac, Yetiskul and their Rock teammates will close out the fall portion of their 2010-11 schedule Friday, Oct. 15, with a 3:30 p.m. dual match at neighboring Grove City College.
