Rock receives votes in AFCA national poll

SRU (5-1) was one of nine NCAA Division II Super Region One teams included in Monday's national poll

WACO, Texas – Fresh off a 28-14 win last Saturday night over then-No. 24 Edinboro, Slippery Rock University was among the teams that received votes in the American Football Coaches Association Division II national poll released Monday.

The Rock (5-1) was one of nine Super Region One teams that earned votes from members of the AFCA voting panel.

California U. of Pa. (6-0), which will host The Rock in a 3:30 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division game Saturday, remained the No. 4 team in the poll and was one of six Super Region One teams included in the top 25.

Shepherd University of West Virginia (6-0) was ranked 18th, Bloomsburg (5-1) ranked 20th, West Virginia Wesleyan (6-0) ranked 21st, Kutztown (6-0) ranked 23rd and Winston-Salem State, N.C. (6-1) ranked 25th.

Joining The Rock among teams that also received votes were Super Region rivals St. Augustine's, N.C. (5-1) and New Haven, Conn. (5-1).

The national ranking was the first earned by SRU since the Sept. 29, 2009 AFCA poll, in which the Green and White were also listed among teams that received votes. That national notice came on the heels of an SRU win over then-No. 23 Indiana (Pa.).

In past years, The Rock and other Division II teams would have found out this week where they stood in the NCAA regional rankings that will ultimately determine the national playoff participants. But the NCAA will not release the first regional poll until Nov. 1.

California, Kutztown, Shepherd and West Virginia Wesleyan are the only Super Region One teams that remain unbeaten after six weeks of action this fall. The Rock, meanwhile, is one of six Super Region One teams with one loss.

The Rock at California game will be one of two feature contests in Super Region One action this weekend. In the other spotlighted game, Shepherd hosts West Virginia Wesleyan in a battle of unbeaten West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams.

Following their game in California, The Rock will turn its attention to the Oct. 23 SRU Homecoming game against PSAC-West rival Lock Haven. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium, where the Green and White are 3-0 this fall.
