Rock shuts out Gannon, 2-0

Kara Mullins and Alyssa Barrett each found the back of the net and Dana O'Neill recorded four saves to lead The Rock to a 2-0 win over Gannon in PSAC action Tuesday night in Erie.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over Gannon Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Gannon University Field.

Kara Mullins and Alyssa Barrett each found the back of the net to lead The Rock (8-3-2, 6-3-2 PSAC) to the crucial conference win. Gannon (3-7-2, 2-7-1 PSAC), which failed to register a shot on goal in the first half, attempted a rally in the second half but was held scoreless by Rock keeper Dana O'Neill.

O'Neill made four saves in the second half to earn the shutout.

Slippery Rock posted a 9-2 advantage in shots in the first half and finished the match with a 16-14 edge in total shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Gannon was awarded two corner kicks to one for SRU.

Tuesday's win moves The Rock into fourth-place in the conference standings with 20 points, one point ahead of Kutztown and Indiana, four points in front of Edinboro and five points ahead of Shippensburg, which currently occupies the eighth and final playoff position. The win also pushed SRU's current unbeaten streak to six consecutive games.

Slippery Rock looked to jump ahead early Tuesday night and was rewarded in the 22nd minute when Mullins found the back of the net off an assist from Juliana Howell.

The Rock kept the pressure on, finishing the half with nine shots, including four on target.

Gannon managed a small rally in the second half, tallying 12 total shots and four shots on goal, but Barrett provided SRU with an insurance tally in the 69th minute to push the lead to 2-0 and ice the game.

Gannon's Sabrina Chirco was credited with the loss after allowing one goal and recording three saves in the first half. Maggie Brinkman played the second half, allowing one goal and picking up two saves.

The Rock is back in action Saturday when Mercyhurst visits Thompson Stadium for a 1 p.m. conference match.
