Rock beats Fairmont State, loses to Alderson-Broaddus

Philippi, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on the road Saturday with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 27-25) win over Fairmont State and a 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 5-15) loss to Alderson-Broaddus College.

The day started with Slippery Rock's (8-15, 5-8 PSAC) fourth five-set loss of the year against Alderson-Broaddus. After winning the first set 25-23, The Rock dropped sets two and three 19-25, 23-25 before coming back to force a fifth set with a 25-16 win in the fourth. However, Alderson-Broaddus was able to pull out the match with a 15-5 win in fifth set.

Sophomore outside hitter Lexi Arnold led The Rock with her third double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs. Junior middle hitter Lisa Bakaitis contributed eight kills and five blocks in the losing effort.

Senior middle blocker Keira Peoples continued her solid play as of late with eight kills and five blocks as well while junior outside hitter Alee Kromer added 33 digs. Senior setter/defensive specialist Anna Bixler handed out 25 assists on offense to go with her two aces and six digs.

Slippery Rock controlled its final match of the day against Fairmont State with 25-21, 25-15 and 27-25 wins.

Junior outside hitter Kaylee Smith led Slippery Rock in its three-set win with a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs. Smith also had three service aces. Arnold added 10 kills and three service aces of her own in the victory.

Bixler also registered a double-double with 19 assists and 13 digs. Bixler, SRU's active leader in career aces, added one more ace. Kromer posted a team-high 20 digs as well.

Slippery Rock will get back into Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Oct. 22 at California (Pa.) at 7 p.m.
