SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will honor breast cancer awareness month when it hosts the annual “Coins for Cancer” game this afternoon. All proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Kickoff for the Oct. 27th match against the University of Charleston is set for 1 p.m. at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
“We didn't host this event last season because we took part in the “Red Card Cancer” initiative,” said Rock head coach
Noreen Herlihy. “We really wanted to bring back this great event to raise funds for the Komen Foundation.”
Fans are encouraged to clean out their spare change and bring it to the game where representatives from the women's soccer team will collect the donations.
The “Coins for Cancer” game is just another in a long line of service projects the women's soccer team and the student-athlete body at Slippery Rock participates in.
Last spring, Herlihy and her team helped organize a 5k run in the town of Slippery Rock that raised over $2,000 for the new inpatient VNA Hospice Center in Butler.
The “Coins for Cancer” game is the third fundraising event being hosted by the Slippery Rock women's fall sports teams. The Rock volleyball team hosted its annual “Dig for the Cure” event last Friday, while the field hockey team is “Playing for the Cure” at all home games during the month of October, including the final game of the month (Oct. 30), when the team will wear pink uniforms.
Fans that cannot attend the game Oct. 27 can still donate to the “Coins for Cancer” fund by contacting Herlihy at 724.738.2946 or via e-mail at noreen.herlihy@sru.edu.
