Softball takes part in Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes

The Rock softball team raised $870 for the American Diabetes Association and took part in Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes, last weekend in Youngstown, Ohio.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University softball team raised over $800 and took part in Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes last weekend at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

“We raised $870 and finished in first-place in the Team and Organizations division,” said head coach Vashion Johnson. “I'm very pleased with this effort, especially since we had a split squad that day with half of the team volunteering at the Special Olympics.”

Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is a nationwide event organized by the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness about the disease and to raise funds to support research and fund programs.

12 players from The Rock softball team took part in the event, while the rest of the team remained on campus to volunteer at the Special Olympics.

“I'm very proud of our student-athletes,” added Johnson. “To have your entire team spending their Sunday volunteering to help others says a lot about the type of people we have on this quad.”
