Rock falls 4-0 to top-ranked Shippensburg

No. 1 Shippensburg handed Slippery Rock a 4-0 loss Wednesday in PSAC-West action. The game marked the third time this season SRU has faced the top-ranked team in the nation.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The first-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team handed Slippery Rock a 4-0 loss Wednesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division match at Thompson Stadium.

Shippensburg remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 12-0 and 4-0 in conference play. The Rock, playing the No. 1 team in the country for the third time this season, fell to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Slippery Rock managed three shots in the game, all coming in the closing seconds. Katie Krouse had two shots on goal that were saved and Gabrielle Malishchak had a deflection that went wide on a corner with no time left in the game.

Shippensburg finished the match with advantages of 30-3 in total shots, 15-2 in shots on goal and 25-1 in penalty corners.

Lisa Belcastro recorded 10 saves in the loss and Erin Moran was credited with one defensive save.

Ciarra Delost played the first 47:46 of the game in goal for Shippensburg and did not face a shot. Carenna Neely played the final 22:14 and made two saves.

Shippensburg scored goals in the 11th, 30th, 35th and 39th minutes.

Katie Pufnock scored two goals, while Kristina Taylor and Amanda Strous each added one goal. Kayla Harshman, Strous and Ashley Taylor each had one assist.

The Rock will remain home for Homecoming weekend with a 10 a.m. Sunday match against Mercy.
