THREE-PEAT: Women's Cross Country Wins 2010 PSAC Championship With Nine All-PSAC Finishes

Spence wins third straight individual title; Dell and Huber finish among Top 5

11/6/2010 12:32:40 PM

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. -
The Shippensburg University women's cross country team placed all five of its scoring runners in the Top 10 to win its third straight PSAC championship and fifth overall on a frigid and muddy Saturday morning from Cal U's hilly Roadman Park course, posting an impressive total of 25 points.

SU entered the race ranked No. 4 in Division II and had nine of its 10 runners achieve All-PSAC designations with a Top 20 finish. Leading the pack was junior Neely Spence, who won her third individual title with a time of 20:52. Spence finished 70 seconds ahead of the closest competitor, Millersville's Elicia Anderson.

Each of Shippensburg's consecutive conference championships has been noteworthy, but Saturday's effort is arguably the most impressive based on the sheer dominance of the performance by the Lady Raider runners.

For example, if Shippensburg's No. 6 through No. 10 runners had competed as a separate team, that group would have finished second at the meet ahead of all the other PSAC schools. Edinboro finished second on Saturday with 104 points – 79 behind Shippensburg and 10 behind the composite score of SU's No. 6 through No. 10 runners.

Seniors Mary Dell and Abby Huber finished in third and fifth place respectively, earning All-PSAC designations in all four of their seasons as a Lady Raider. Dell's time of 22:14 marks her second consecutive third-place finish, while Huber's time of 22:31 helped her achieve her best finish at the conference meet.

What a race it was for senior Emily Dubs – a true competitor that had not run at the PSAC meet until last season when she finished 43rd in 24:31. On Saturday, Dubs took seventh place with a time of 22:43 that is a nine-second improvement on her 6K PR that she set two weeks ago at Kutztown.

Sophomore Katie Spratford ran for just the third time this season and finished ninth with a time of 22:52 – a 17-second improvement upon her only other 6K race in 2010. Spratford was SU's No. 5 runner on Saturday but 25 places higher than any other No. 5 runner in the field.

Junior Sarah Strayer continued to impress, serving as the No. 6 runner for the afternoon despite a time of 23:12 that was good enough for 14th place. Strayer had finished in 38th place in each of her two previous conference championship meets.

Freshman Patty Reis made her case for the PSAC Freshman of the Year award by finishing as the league's No. 1 rookie with a 16th-place time of 23:18. Reis finished seven places and 25 seconds ahead of the next closest freshman, Edinboro's Monica Ciarniello.

The most inspirational story of the day belongs to redshirt junior Jamie McCollum – who continued her comeback with an All-PSAC time of 23:21. McCollum has battled with the symptoms of Lyme disease for more than two years and had not run at the conference meet since achieving a 15th-place finish in 2007.

Junior Katie Frey finished just three seconds behind McCollum to earn 19th place and solidify her as the team's ninth All-PSAC performer. Frey's time of 23:24 marked her third consecutive Top 20 finish at the conference meet.

Senior Lindsey Hollenshead crossed the finish line in 23:52 in 28th place, only 20 seconds short of an All-PSAC pace. Hollenshead has been an integral member of the team during her three years in the program. She would have been the No. 1 runner for seven of the other schools in the meet.

The 2010 Atlantic Regional Championships will be held in two weeks from Cary, N.C.

Video highlights and interviews from the race will be available on Sunday.
