SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University paid the price for six turnovers Saturday afternoon as Gannon University handed The Rock a 24-20 setback in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division football action on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson.

The Rock lost three fumbles and had three passes intercepted in the game and, in the process, lost the chance to capture sole possession of third place in the final PSAC-West standings, as well as compile an unbeaten record in home games.

Saturday's loss, the second in as many weeks for SRU, dropped The Rock's overall record to 6-4 and its PSAC-West mark to 3-4. The Green and White finished the division schedule in a four-way tie with Clarion, Edinboro and Indiana for fourth place.

Gannon, which with the win Saturday improved its records to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in PSAC-West, finished third in the division standings, two games behind co-champions California (9-1, 6-1) and Mercyhurst (8-2, 6-1).

The Rock outgained Gannon by a 303-269 margin in total yards behind a balanced attack (167 yards passing, 136 yards rushing).

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Ryan Sabo had his second highest passing yardage (167) and pass completions (14 in 25 attempts) totals of the season Saturday, but also threw a season-high three interceptions. Two of the INTs came on passes tipped into the air by Rock receivers.

Redshirt sophomore running back Akeem Satterfield, the No. 3 rusher in the conference and No. 7 rusher in the nation (Division II), had 151 yards on 35 carries and scored both Rock touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 23 yards.

With the rushing yards Saturday, Satterfield moved into 19th place on SRU's single-season rushing chart with 1,081 yards this fall. He is the 23rd Rock player to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in one season.

Satterfield's TD runs of 28 and eight yards Saturday were his 15th and 16th of the season and moved him into a tie for fourth place on SRU's single-season TDs chart.

Junior H-Back Devin Goda caught two passes for a team-high 45 yards Saturday to improve his season catches total to 52 and move into sole possession of sixth on that SRU single-season chart.

Junior wide receiver Kevin Sanders with Satterfield for team-high honors in pass receptions Saturday with three for 30 yards, while Goda was one of four Rock players to catch two passes in the game.

Junior linebacker Zach Sheridan led The Rock defense with nine tackles. Junior defensive tackle Scott Kachurik had two quarterback sacks for minus-14 yards and junior defensive end Quintin Johnson had one sack for minus-9 yards.

The Rock held the first lead of the game after senior kicking specialist #C.J. Bahr# booted a 20-yard field goal with 6:50 left in the first period to cap an 11-play, 55-yard drive.

Satterfield's 28-yard TD run expanded The Rock lead to 10-0 with 2:21 left in the opening period. The run capped a five-play, 62-yard Rock drive.

Gannon responded to that drive with an eight-play, 79-yard march of its own that trimmed the deficit to 10-7 with 13:52 left in the second period. Evan Twombly caught a 10-yard pass from Golden Knights quarterback Zack Boedinger to cap the drive.

Satterfield's eight-yard TD burst with 1:38 left before halftime climaxed a nine-play, 44-yard drive and pushed The Rock to a 17-7 lead.

Just over a minute later, Gannon cut the margin to 17-14 as Boedicker connected with Geoff Hicks for a 15-yard TD on the first play following The Rock's first lost fumble of the game.

The Rock took that 17-14 edge into the halftime intermission but held it less than two minutes into the third period as Gannon kicker Jeremy Ditzler booted a 41-yrd field goal to knot the score at 17-17 with 13:02 left in the third quarter.

Two Rock possessions later, Bahr kicked a 37-yard field goal to put The Rock back in front, 20-17, with 3:33 left in the third stanza.

That lead stood for approximately two and a half minutes of game time before Boedicker rambled 61 yards on a bootleg for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 0:58 left in the third quarter.

The Rock had a chance to trim the margin to one point or even retake the lead on the ensuing possession as redshirt sophomore Anthony Saunders returned the kickoff 31 yards to the Gannon 39-yard line.

Seven plays later, the potential scoring drive stalled at the Gannon 18 and Bahr was called upon to attempt a 32-yard field goal with 11:14 left to play in the game. The kick sailed wide of the left upright, though, and The Rock came away with no points on the drive.

Bahr's two field goals and two extra point kicks moved him into sole possession of sixth place on SRU's career scoring list with 236 points in four seasons. The field goals were the 33rd and 34th of his career and left him one shy of the school record held by Morgan Anderson (1997-2000). Anderson also holds the school record for career extra points (161), with Bahr in second place at 134.

The Rock will look to end their two-game losing skid and finish the season on a winning note next Saturday when they host C.W. Post in a 1 p.m. game at Thompson Stadium.

A dozen Rock senior football student athletes will be honored prior to that game, their final appearance in a Green and White uniform.
