Tommie Campbell is rolling. His 10.70 helped his Aliquippa squad easily take the AA boys title. Montel WIlliamson of the winning AAA team, West Mifflin, was 2nd in 10.77. The Quips also got the better of West Mifflin in the 4x100, 42.67 to 42.89. West Mifflin toasted the track in the 4x400, timed in 3:23.62. Once again the Baldwin meet showcased the region's distance talent. Two athletes decided that the 1600-3200 double was within their reach. Jeff Weiss of McGuffey did hold off Ellwood City's Jake Walker in the 3200 9:09.16 to 9:10.03. But Weiss took 2nd to Connellsville's Ken King in the four-lapper, 4:14.46 to 4:14.93. King also captured the 800, going 1:57.06. Walker slipped to 4th in the 1600 at 4:17.57, just behind North Allegheny's Max Brown at 4:15.47. West Allegheny was only two points behind West Mifflin in the AAA title chase. Cardel Johnson did his part, winning the 200 in 22.08 and the 400 in 49.50. Eric Sparks, Hickory, set a meet record in the Pole Vault, clearing 16-00. Chad Radgowski, South Park, is approaching 200 feet in the Javelin, throwing 198-06.
In the girls competition, Penn Hills took perennial power McDowell of Erie by 1.5 points. Their 4x100 set a meet record in 48.15, and Sha-Tira Snell contributed points by placing 1st in the 100 Hurdles in 14.63 and taking 2nd in the 300 Hurdles in 47.11. Baldwin's Jordan Veney put on quite a show, posting two nationally ranked performances in winning the Discus with a throw of 149-05 and the Shot Put at 45-05.75. As usual, McDowell's Nicole Smith was a point machine, taking the Triple Jump (39-02) and the High Jump (5-08), and getting 2nd in the Long Jump at 18-06 to Great Valley's Janessa Murphy at 19-00.75. Smith was also 2nd in the 100 Hurdles at 14.90. North Allegheny set a meet record 3:58.91 in the 4x400. Quaker Valley served 4x800 notice with a 9:31.18. There was a strong distance double from Shady Side Academy's Katie Roll, winning the 1600 in 5:06.25 and the 3200 in 11:03.37. Her team won the AA title by two points over Fairview. In the sprints, Beahana Jacobs, Laurel Highlands, went 11.75 and 24.71 for two wins. And both McDowell's Alexandra Acker and Latrobe's Caitlin Hewitt cleared 12-00 to go one-two in the Pole Vault.
