#3 Bloomsburg rallies for 3-1 win over Rock

The Rock held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but four-time defending national champion and third-ranked Bloomsburg scored three second half goals to rally for a 3-1 win in Slippery Rock's final home game of the season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Four-time defending national champion and third-ranked Bloomsburg University rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Slippery Rock University field hockey team 3-1 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover match Tuesday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

The Rock (5-14) scored in the third minute and was attempting to pull off the biggest upset of the season in their final home game, but Bloomsburg (15-2) rallied with three second half goals, including two in the final nine minutes, to seal the win.

Gabrielle Malishchak put Slippery Rock on the board at the 2:03 mark when she fired a hard shot into the left side of the net off an assist from Allie Hartman. The goal was Malishchak's team-leading sixth goal of the season, while Hartman picked up her team-leading seventh assist on the year.

Bloomsburg managed 10 shots, including seven on goal, for the remainder of the first half but could not solve Rock keeper Lisa Belcastro, who made six saves in the half to preserve the 1-0 lead at the intermission. Meghan McKinney was also credited with a defensive save in the half.

The Huskies took just 40 seconds of the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Jenna DiSabatino scored her eighth goal of the season with a shot that deflected off a Rock defender and redirected past Belcastro. Amanda Riley was credited with an assist on the play.

It took nearly the remainder of regulation for the Huskies to get the go-ahead goal, but Nicole Bruce provided that with 8:08 to play when she slipped the game-winner in between the legs of Belcastro off an assist from Lindsay Danz.

The Rock had two penalty corners and recorded two shots while trailing 2-1, but the Bloomsburg defense withstood the challenge to preserve the lead. Ashley Miller added an insurance goal off an assist from Riley with 1:43 to play to put the game away.

Belcastro finished the game with eight saves, while McKinney and Erin Moran added defensive saves for 10 total team saves.

Hollenbach made no saves and allowed one goal to record the win for Bloomsburg.

The Huskies finished the game with advantages of 20-4 in total shots, 13-1 in shots on goal and 17-4 in penalty corners.

Slippery Rock will close out the 2010 season with PSAC-West match at Indiana (Pa.) Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
