#22 Rock opens NCAA Tournament with 3-1 win over Wesleyan

No. 22 Slippery Rock got goals from three different players en route to a 3-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Friday.

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Three different players scored goals to lead the 22nd-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in the opening round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament Friday at Roadman Park.

Slippery Rock, the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Region, ran its current unbeaten streak to 14 games and improved to 14-3-4 on the season. West Virginia Wesleyan, the No. 6 seed in the region, finishes its season at 12-4-2.

The Rock advances to the second round where they will face 10th-ranked California (Pa.) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Roadman Park.

Slippery Rock got goals from Alyssa Barrett, Danielle Turner and Shelby Ward and finished the match with advantages of 13-8 in total shots and 5-2 in shots on goal. West Virginia Wesleyan got a goal late in the game from Meghan Zayas and posted a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Dana O'Neil earned the win in goal with one save for SRU. Lauren Hessian took the loss for the Bobcats after allowing two goals and recording one save in the first half. Emma McCoy allowed one goal and made one save in the second half.

Barrett opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when she headed in a corner kick from Rachel Knapp on what was the only corner of the game for SRU.

Turner increased the lead to 2-0 in the 40th minute when she headed in a crossing pass from Shelby Ward for what would become the game-winning goal. SRU held a 2-0 lead at halftime and a 6-3 advantage in total shots.

Ward pushed the lead to 3-0 early in the second half when she took a cross from Turner in the 53rd minute and beat two defenders in the center of the box.

Wesleyan scored its lone goal in the 88th minute when Zayas scored off an assist from Rachel Taylor.
