CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The 22nd-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with No. 10 California (Pa.) in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament Sunday at Roadman Park. The Vulcans advanced to the third round with a 4-2 edge in a penalty kick shootout.

The Rock finishes its season on a school record unbeaten streak of 15 consecutive games, posting a record of 10-0-5 over that stretch and finishing the season at 14-3-5. California improves to 18-1-2 on the year.

California scored an early goal and held on to the lead for most of regulation before Alyssa Barrett headed in a corner kick from Ashley Paganie to tie the game with 11:55 to play. That goal snapped a streak of 630 consecutive minutes in which Cal had not allowed a goal.

Paganie's assist on the play was her 26th career assist, establishing a new career record at Slippery Rock.

Dana O'Neill made two incredible saves in the overtime session to preserve the tie, and it looked as if The Rock had won the game when Alison Hindley headed in a goal in the first overtime, but the linesman called the play offside, sending the game to a penalty kick shootout.

In the shootout, Vulcan keeper Paula Jackson made two saves and California's first four shooters all scored to seal a 4-2 win in the shootout. Paganie and Hindley each converted their penalty tries for SRU.

The opening goal of the game came from Kayla Fransko, who fired a long shot from 35 yards out that just snuck over the head of O'Neill at the 6:48 mark.

After the opening goal, Slippery Rock regained momentum and controlled play for much of the half, but could not find the equalizer.

California came out firing in the second half, but O'Neill withstood the challenge and made seven saves in the half to keep SRU in the game.

After Barrett's goal in the 79th minute tied the game, neither team could convert down the stretch to send the match to overtime.

In the first extra session, California managed three shots, including two on goal, but again O'Neill withstood the charge. In the second session, the Vulcans finished with eight shots, including three on goal, but neither team could find the net.

California finished the game with advantages of 28-6 in total shots, 13-5 in shots on goal and 3-2 in corner kicks.

O'Neill made a career-high 12 saves to earn the tie. Jackson registered four saves for Cal.

Slippery Rock finishes its season after posting the 15th consecutive winning season and the 13th consecutive season with 10 or more wins. Sunday's game marked the end of the collegiate careers for Hindley, Paganie, Rachel Knapp, Dana Kiger and Juliana Howell. Hindley finishes her career as the fourth leading scorer in SRU history, followed closely by Paganie as the fifth leading scorer.

California will face West Chester in the round of 16 next weekend. That match will be a rematch of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title game, which finished in a 0-0 tie before West Chester won a penalty kick shootout.
