Slow start for Rock leads to Findlay win

Slippery Rock outscored Findlay in the second half but could not recover from a slow start in dropping a 83-56 decision to the Oilers Sunday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team outscored Findlay in the second half, but could not make up for a slow start in suffering an 83-56 loss in non-conference action Sunday at Morrow Field House.

Findlay (4-1) shot 63 percent from the floor in the first half to a dismal 15.4 percent for Slippery Rock (0-4), which converted a season-low four field goals in the half. The Oilers ran out to a 42-14 halftime lead.

The Rock recovered in the second half to outscore Findlay 42-41, shooting 56.3 percent and making 18 shots from the floor.

A high point in the game came on the defensive side of the ball for The Rock, who caused 23 Oiler turnovers while turning the ball over just 12 times.

Danielle Smith finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Slippery Rock. Alex Beatty finished with 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and Shannon Lee added 10 points to cap the double-digit scorers.

Bethany Caudill handed out seven assists, while Grace Palucis added eight points, four assists, four steals and four rebounds.

Findlay was led by Laura Bardall with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals. Clare Aubry added 13 points and five rebounds while Carlay Stahl and Kendra Elam finished with nine points each. The Oilers had 10 of the 11 players that saw the court score at least four points.

Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field, while Findlay shot 67.9 percent (36-53). The Oilers posted a 38-22 edge in total rebounds, including a 32-15 advantage in defensive boards.

Findlay opened the game with the first four points and Slippery Rock came back to tie the game at 4-4 before the Oilers went on a 10-0 run to open up a 14-4 lead with 10:15 left in the first half.

Slippery Rock could not recover from the deficit, coming to within seven points at 14-7 with 8:35 left in the half before Findlay closed the half with a 28-7 run to take a 42-14 lead into the intermission.

Every attempt Slippery Rock made to climb back into the game was shut down by the hot-shooting Oilers, who posted a shooting percentage of 73.1 in the second half. Slippery Rock cut the lead to 24 points at 56-32 with 13:20 to play, but would come no closer down the stretch.

Slippery Rock will hit the road for its next two games, traveling to Urbana (Ohio) Dec. 4 for a 2 p.m. game and visiting Pitt-Johnstown Dec. 8 for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The Rock returns home Dec. 11 as host to Notre Dame (Ohio) in a 2 p.m. tip.
