Rock falls short 66-62 at Urbana

Alex Beatty scored a team-high 19 points and The Rock held a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but Urbana rallied to earn a 66-62 win Saturday.

URBANA, Ohio – Urbana University rallied from an early 10-point deficit and held on down the stretch to hand the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team a 66-62 defeat in non-conference action at the Grimes Center Saturday afternoon.

The Rock (0-5) jumped out to a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but Urbana (2-4) rallied to take the lead at halftime and never allowed Slippery Rock to regain the lead in the second half.

Alex Beatty led Slippery Rock with a season-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Marlynda Harland added a season-high 11 points, while Emilee Vitez and Shannon Lee each narrowly missed double-doubles. Vitez scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, while Lee finished with nine points and 13 assists.

Utrbana was led by Haley Ducey with a game-high 20 points. Andrea Vogel added 16 points and nine rebounds and Devonyea Johnson chipped in 10 points.

The Blue Knights finished the game shooting 44.8 percent from the field (26-58), but made just 3-of-13 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.

Slippery Rock shot 47.9 percent from the field (23-48) and made 7-of-18 attempts from behind the arc, but was just 9-of-17 at the free throw line.

Both teams traded buckets out of the gate before The Rock went on a 9-0 run over a stretch of less than two minutes run to take a 15-7 lead with 14:21 to play in the first half. Slippery Rock pushed its lead out to as much as 10 points when Beatty converted a layup off a fastbreak to make the score 24-14 with 10:09 to play in the half.

Urbana responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead 25-24 with 6:18 to play before the half. The teams traded baskets down the stretch and the Blue Knights carried a 34-30 lead into the halftime break.

Urbana pushed its lead up to as much as 11 points to open the second half, taking a 46-35 lead with 15:17 to play. Slippery Rock pushed back with 5-0 run to cut the deficit to six points and got even closer when Harland made a layup with 7:17 to play to cut the lead to just two points at 51-49.

The Blue Knights shut the door with an 11-3 run to move out to a 10-point lead at 62-52 with 2:27 to play. SRU closed the game on a 10-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Beatty to make the final deficit four points at 66-62.

The Rock remains on the road for its next game, a 5:30 p.m. tip at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Wednesday, Dec. 8.
