Steve Spence Repeats As PSAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shippensburg's Steve Spence was named the 2010 PSAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year on Thursday – marking the third straight year that he has won the women's coach of the year award and the second straight year that he has received the men's award.

Last year, Spence became the first PSAC coach in 10 years to win both of the league's coach of the year awards. He repeats this year after both of his teams won PSAC championships and posted Top-8 finishes at the Division II National Championships.

On the women's side, Coach Spence guided the Lady Raiders to their third consecutive conference and regional championships this season before placing fourth at the Division II National Championships. The 2010 victories have been particularly impressive, as SU recorded a 79-point victory at the PSAC meet and an 86-point victory at the regional meet.

At the PSAC Championships, SU had nine of its 10 runners achieve All-PSAC honors with a Top 20 finish. SU's pack was so impressive at the meet, that if the No. 6 through No. 10 runners had competed as a separate team, that group would have finished second at the meet ahead of all the other PSAC schools.

At the regional championships, all five of SU's scoring performers earned All-Region honors and all seven of its runners finished among the Top 20 competitors. SU's national finish is its second-best in school history.

On the men's side, Spence instructed a group that won its first conference championship in school history by placing four runners among the Top 5 and had all 10 of its runners finish in the Top 30. If SU's top five scorers lined up in a dual meet competition against all of the other finishers from the PSAC, the Raiders still would have won the conference championship.

A second-place finish at the Atlantic Region Championships put Shippensburg in the national meet for the second-straight year. At nationals, the Raider harriers finished seventh as a team – improving six spots from 2009. Shippensburg was ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation during the season by the USTFCCCA.

Spence, in his 13th season at Shippensburg, brought his career total of PSAC Coach of the Year awards to six. He was also the PSAC Men's Coach of the Year in 2001.
