Rock rolls to 97-48 win over Ohio U. Eastern

Four players finished with double-digit scoring totals for The Rock (6-3), who recorded their sixth win in the last seven games

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Four Slippery Rock University players recorded double-figure scoring totals Wednesday afternoon to lead The Rock to a 97-48 men's basketball win over visiting Ohio University Eastern in Morrow Field House.

The win was the sixth in the last seven games for The Rock (6-3), who return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday with a home game against backyard rival Grove City College (4-5).

The victory also moved third-year Rock head coach Kevin Reynolds into sole possession of 10th place on SRU's career wins list. He now owns a 42-23 record as the Green and White's boss.

Ohio University Eastern saw its overall season record fall to 9-8, 0-5 against NCAA Division II opponents.

Senior guard Jabril Bailey led The Rock scoring attack with 17 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Devin Taylor and senior forward Joe Vines each added 16 points and senior forward Maron Brown chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Vines also grabbed six rebounds in a substitute role, while sophomore guard Aubin Reeves scored eight points and handed out seven assists off the bench.

Zach Tolsda scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds for Ohio University Eastern.

The outcome was never in doubt as The Rock scored the first 10 points of the game and held a 14-point, 29-15, lead with seven minutes left before halftime.

SRU held a pair of 23-point leads, the final one a 47-24 advantage with 60 seconds left, en route to a 47-27 lead at the intermission.

The Rock shot a very respectable 48.9% (22-45) from the field and made three of four free throws in the first half, but were 0-for-4 from 3-point range.

Ohio University Eastern, on the other hand, shot a frigid 29% (9-31) from the field, hit two of 11 (18.2%) from beyond the arc and sank seven of 10 free throws.

The Rock held a slim 24-23 rebounding margin at the intermission and was on the lower end of a 15-6 turnover comparison.

SRU outscored OUE by a 40-8 margin in the paint and by an 18-9 margin off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Rock never led by less than 19 points in the final 20 minutes of action. The final margin was the largest lead of the game.

Final statistics showed The Rock with a 51.8% (44-85) efficiency from the field thanks to a 55% (22-40) effort in the second half.

SRU finished the game with a 58.3% (7-12) efficiency from the foul line and a 22.2% (2-9) accuracy from beyond the arc. The hosts outrebounded their guests by a 27-16 margin in the final half to finish with a 51-39 advantage and committed only 10 turnovers compared to 24 for OUE.

The Rock outscored the Panthers by a 72-16 margin in the paint, 34-9 in points off turnovers and 46-10 in points off the bench.

Ohio University Eastern finished the game with a 28.6% (16-56) efficiency from the field, shot 18.8% (3-16) from 3-point range and made 50% (13-26) of its free throws.

Notes:

Wednesday's double-double was the seventh recorded by Brown this winter and the 33rd of his three-year Rock career … SRU is now 5-0 all-time against Ohio University Eastern with all the wins coming in the last three seasons and in Morrow Field House … Wednesday's point total was the highest recorded by The Rock this winter. The previous high came in the first meeting with OUE, when SRU won a 92-46 decision.
