Rock's late rally falls short at Seton Hill

A 15-2 Slippery Rock run over the final 5:19 was not enough as The Rock dropped a 60-52 decision on the road at Seton Hill Thursday.

Box Score

Shannon Lee
GREENSBURG, Pa. – Seton Hill opened up a 10-point halftime lead and increased its lead to 21 points in the second half en route to earning a 60-52 win over Slippery Rock in non-conference women's basketball action Thursday afternoon.

The Rock (1-7) closed the game with a 15-2 run over the final 5:19, but could not eat up the 21-point advantage built by the Griffins (8-1).

Four players scored in double figures for SRU, led by Shannon Lee with 13 points. She also pulled down six rebounds and handed out four assists. Danielle Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Alex Beatty and Sherita Stanley added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Emilee Vitez added four points as the fifth starter and Grace Palucis capped the scoring with two points, the only points scored by The Rock bench.

Jordan Burkes led Seton Hill with a game-high 18 points, while Lindsy Muchnock added 11 points and eight rebounds and Jill Embery chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Griffins finished the game with a 34-32 advantage in total rebounds and scored 17 second chance points to just five second effort points for SRU. Seton Hill's bench finished with a 19-2 edge over The Rock.

Slippery Rock posted a 34-16 edge in points in the paint and finished the game with a slight advantage in shooting percentage, going 22-of-51 from the field for a field goal percentage of 43.1. The Rock hit on 3-of-11 attempts from the 3-point arc, while knocking down 5-of-6 free throw attempts.

Seton Hill shot 37.9 percent from the field, connecting on 22-of-58 attempts, including 8-of-28 from the 3-point arc. The Griffins were 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Smith opened the game's scoring with a layup in the first minute, but Seton Hill answered back with a 3-pointer to take the lead. The Griffins pushed the lead out to as much as 13 points in the first half and took a 33-23 lead into the break.

Seton Hill came out strong in the second half and pushed the lead up to 21 points at 58-37 with 5:19 to play. The Rock's defense stepped up and allowed just one basket down the stretch, but a 15-2 run to close the game would not be enough.

Thursday's game marked the final game of the season against an opponent not in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Rock will play four crossover games against PSAC-East opponents before opening the PSAC-West schedule.

Slippery Rock is back in action Jan. 3 with a crossover game at East Stroudsburg. The Rock will then travel to Kutztown for a crossover Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. before returning home to host a pair of crossovers, Jan. 8-9, against Bloomsburg and Mansfield.
