Fusco receives Rimington Award

SRU senior Brandon Fusco was named Tuesday as the top NCAA Division II center in the nation by the Boomer Esiason Foundation

Brandon Fusco Rimington
LINCOLN, Neb. – When it's all said and done, Slippery Rock University senior Brandon Fusco may need to build an addition to his parents' home in Cranberry Township, Pa., to house all the awards he has received.

Fusco added yet another prestigious honor to his collection Tuesday when he was named as the NCAA Division II recipient of the Dave Rimington Award.

The Rimington Award, named after the University of Nebraska's two-time consensus All-America and former NFL Cincinnati Bengals center, is presented to the premier center in each of four divisions: NCAA Division I-AA, Division II and Division III and NAIA.

Fusco was the eighth recipient of the Division II Rimington Award, which was developed to complement the Rimington Trophy, which will be awarded for the 11th time to the outstanding Division I-A center.

Rimington, the only player to earn two John Outland trophies, is widely considered to have been one of the best centers in the history of college football.

The Rimington Trophy and Award are sponsored by the Boomer Esiason Foundation created by the former NFL quarterback in 1993 to support research and treatment of cystic fibrosis, a deadly genetic disease afflicting his son, Gunnar. Proceeds from the annual Rimington Trophy awards ceremony benefit cystic fibrosis.

Rimington and Esiason were Bengals teammates from 1984-87.

Fusco added the Rimington Award to his collection one day after becoming the first Rock player to earn an invitation to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine and a few weeks after being named as the 2010 recipient of the Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award.

As of January 1, 2011, Fusco, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound graduate of Seneca Valley High School, was ranked fifth among draft-eligible centers by cbssports.com and the only Division II player ranked in the top five draft prospects at any position. He was projected by cbssports.com to be a fifth- or sixth-round NFL draft pick.

To prepare for the NFL Combine, Fusco began training in early December at the IMG Performance Institute in Bradenton, Fla.

In addition to the Rimington Award, NFL Combine invitation and Upshaw Award, Fusco's resume included:
