Rock falls to hot-shooting Kutztown, 86-58

Shannon Lee scored a career-high 19 points, but it would not be enough to stop a hot-shooting Kutztown team as The Rock fell to the Golden Bears, 86-58 Tuesday night.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team shot 72 percent from the field and made 7-of-8 3-pointers in the second half to pull away for an 86-58 win over Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover Tuesday evening.

The Rock (1-9) jumped out to an early lead in the first half before Kutztown (7-3) put together separate runs of 10-0 and 8-0 to take control of the game heading into halftime. The Golden Bears were unstoppable in the second half, hitting 18-of-25 attempts from the field, including 7-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc.

Shannon Lee led Slippery Rock with a career-high 19 points. She also pulled down four rebounds, handed out six assists and recorded two steals. Sherita Stanley and Grace Palucis added nine points each, while Danielle Smith scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

Ashley Wood led three Kutztown players in double figures with a game-high 26 points. Kristen Murray added 15 points and Melissa McQuade chipped in 14 points.

The Golden Bears finished the game shooting 53.4 percent from the floor, connecting on 31-of-58 attempts, including 10-of-15 from behind the 3-point arc. Kutztown was 14-of-20 at the free throw line.

Slippery Rock shot 43.4 percent from the floor, hitting 23-of-53 shots, including 7-of-22 from 3-point land. The Rock made just six trips to the charity stripe, converting on five tries.

Kutztown forced a season-high 30 turnovers while giving the ball up just 12 times. The hosts turned those giveaways into a 31-13 advantage in points off turnovers.

Tuesday's game was the second in two days for both teams, which will play four crossover games this week.

Slippery Rock came out of the gate strong, scoring first and opening a six-point lead at 7-1 in the first two minutes. The Rock held that six-point edge at 9-3 with 16:57 to play in the half before Kutztown mounted a 10-0 run to take a 13-9 lead with 12:01 left before the break.

SRU tied the game at 16-16 with 8:47 left in the half, but again the Golden Bears responded, this time with an 8-0 run to take a 24-16 lead with 4:45 before the break. The hosts pushed the lead to as much as 13 and took a 33-23 advantage into the intermission.

Kutztown recovered from a mediocre shooting effort in the first half with a blazing effort in the second half, opening up with a 27-14 run over the first 10 minutes to take a 60-37 lead.

The Rock cut the lead to 17 at 70-53 with 3:30 to play, but the Golden Bears slammed the door with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Tuesday's game marked the final away crossover game for SRU, which returns home this Saturday and Sunday to host Bloomsburg and Mansfield for the final two crossovers. Tip is set for 1 p.m. both days.
