Bob Raymond In Memory
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Dr. Robert E. "Bob" Raymond, former Director of Athletics and golf coach at Slippery Rock University, passed away Dec. 15, 2010, at the age of 96.

Dr. Raymond died peacefully at Amsterdam Nursing Home in New York City, according to his daughter, Lynne Sakayama.

"I hope he will be remembered as an avid educator and competitor who touched the lives of his many students and friends," she said in an e-mail to retired SRU Sports Information Director John Carpenter.

In lieu of a memorial service, Dr. Raymond's family created a website, www.tru1y.com, "In Memoriam for Dr. Robert E. Raymond 1914-2010" to share some aspects of his long, rich life with those people who knew him. To post a comment, the password is "gramps," Sakayama said.

Dr. Raymond served as SRU's athletic director from 1965-79. He also coached the golf team for 11 seasons and was a professor of health and physical education at SRU, as well as a past president of the Massachusetts State Athletic Directors organization and secretary of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors organization.

Dr. Raymond compiled a 117-38-2 record as The Rock's golf coach. He tutored 14 student athletes who earned All-America honors and led his last team to an NCAA Division III national runner-up team in 1979.

A former NAIA and NCAA Coach of the Year, Dr. Raymond earned the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus shortly after his retirement and was a 2000 inductee into the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame.
