INDIANA, Pa. –
Senior forward Maron Brown became the 21st player in Slippery Rock University men's basketball history to surpass the 1,000-point mark in career scoring Saturday night but could not lead The Rock to victory.

Defending NCAA Division II national runner-up Indiana U. of Pa. (10-3, 2-0 PSAC-W) never trailed in the game and handed SRU an 84-67 setback despite a 17-point, 11-rebound effort by Brown.

Saturday's effort improved Brown's three-year Rock career totals to 1,014 points and 705 rebounds, the latter mark good for 12th place on SRU's all-time list. The “double-double” effort was Brown's 12th of the season.

Junior guard Devin Taylor added 12 points and junior guard John Bayardelle chipped in 10 points for SRU, which saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.

Darryl Webb led the winning attack with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Julian Sanders added 20 points and Ashton Smith 14.

The Rock (11-5, 1-1 PSAC-W) will look to bounce back Wednesday night when they play a second straight road game, this one at division rival Lock Haven (1-12, 0-2 PSAC-W). Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

SRU returns home next Saturday, Jan. 22, for a 3 p.m. game in Morrow Field House against PSAC-West co-leader Mercyhurst (11-3, 2-0 PSAC-W).

Indiana, which recorded its 30th straight home win, never trailed in Saturday's game, took a 16-point (48-32) lead into halftime and never looked back.

The Crimson Hawks pulled out to a nine-point, 22-13, lead with 12:00 left in the first half before SRU responded with an 11-3 run to trim the margin to three points, 27-24, with 8:15 left before the intermission.

Indiana answered that Rock run with a 14-5 spurt to push the margin to 12 points, 41-29, with 2:15 left in the half and then scored seven of the final 10 first-half points.

Brown accounted for over one-third of The Rock's first-half points as he scored 11 points and also grabbed eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes of action, while Taylor had seven points.

The Rock shot 36% (10-28) from the field, an ice-cold 17% (1-6) from 3-point range and a lukewarm 65% (11-17) from the foul line.

Indiana, on the other hand, shot 47% (14-30) from the field, 43% (6-14) from beyond the arc and 78% (14-18) from the foul line.

Behind Brown's lead, The Rock outrebounded Indiana by a 22-16 margin but were on the high end of a 10-3 turnover comparison at halftime.

Indiana scored the first six second-half points to push its lead to 22 points, 54-32, with 18:30 left to play in the game and held a 27-point, 67-40, advantage 11:15 left.

SRU responded with a 10-0 run in the next two and half minutes to trim the deficit to 17 points, 67-50, with 8:45 left.

That proved to be the extent of any Rock rally, though, as Indiana scored eight points in the next two and a half minutes to take a 77-50 lead with six minutes left and never led by less than 17 points the rest of the way.

The Rock finished the game with a 42% (22-53) efficiency on its field goal attempts, shot 38% (5-13) from 3-point range and sank 62% (18-29) of its charity tosses.

Indiana finished with a 47% (28-59) efficiency from the field, a 41% (7-17) showing from 3-point range and an 81% (21-26) accuracy from the foul line.

The winners outrebounded SRU by a 35-34 margin and had less turnovers, 16-11.
