Four Earn MAC Weekly Honors

ANNVILLE, Pa. – For the first time this season, a total four Albright athletes earned MAC weekly honors. Chris Sheerer and Allie Fies were selected as the MAC swimmers of the week, while Justin Gewirtz and Danisha Higgs were named the MAC track and field athletes of the week.

Sheerer and Fies played a major part in the conference wins over Misericordia University on Saturday. In the men's meet, Sheerer recorded first place finishes in the 100 back (54.85), the 200 back (2:00.46), and the 200 IM (2:01.81). He was also a part of the 400 medley relay team that finished second with a time of 3:44.40.

Fies' weekend consisted of three individual first place finishes as well. She earned the top times in the 200 free (2:00.75), the 100 free (55.19), and the 500 free (5:37.40). As part of the 400 free relay team, Fies led the Lady Lions to a first place finish with their combined time of 3:44.60.

In their first meet of 2011, Higgs and Gewirtz each broke a school record at the Kutztown University Collegiate Invite. For Higgs her record setting performance came in the 55 meter dash finals, when she recorded a time of 7.53 seconds. Her time which earned her second place at the meet broke the original record by 1-hundredth of a second. Higgs also placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.66 seconds.

Gewirtz's record performance also provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division III national indoor meet. With a leap of 6-07.50 in the high jump, Gewirtz won the event and broke the original record by over two feet.
