Big runs lead Lock Haven over SRU, 71-47

Slippery Rock had its worst shooting night of the season and Lock Haven used separate runs of 18-0 and 12-0 to pull away for a 71-47 win Wednesday night in PSAC-West action.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team had its worst shooting night of the season en route to dropping a 71-47 decision on the road at Lock Haven Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division matchup.

The Rock (2-13, 0-3 PSAC) and the Lady Eagles (8-6, 1-2 PSAC) entered this week as the only two teams in the PSAC-West without a win. Lock haven used an 18-0 run early in the first half to break open the game and never looked back, leaving The Rock as the lone team still in search of a divisional win.

Slippery Rock finished the game with its worst field goal percentage of the season at 29.3 percent, connecting on 17-of-58 attempts from the floor. The Rock made eight of a season-high 29 3-point attempts and was 5-10 at the free throw line.

Sherita Stanley was the lone Rock player to reach double digits in the scoring column, finishing with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Alex Beatty added eight points and Danielle Smith chipped in seven.

Lock Haven finished the game with a 34-14 advantage in points in the paint, accompanying a 45-37 edge in total rebounds and a 26-14 margin in points off turnovers.

The Lady Eagles shot 43.3 percent from the field, hitting 29-of-67 attempts, including 6-of-18 from the 3-point arc, and connected on 7-of-12 attempts from the charity stripe.

Emily Daugherty led three players in double-figures with a game-high 16 points. Kristen Kudrick added 15 points and Sharay Hall chipped in 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The game's first points came on a 3-pointer from Stanley just 51 seconds into play and The Rock owned a 6-5 lead with 15:13 left in the first half. Lock Haven took the lead on its next possession when Kelsey Ryan hit a layup that sparked an 18-0 run over the next 5:36 as the hosts opened up a 23-6 advantage with 9:37 to play before the intermission.

The Lady Eagles pushed the lead out to as much as 23 points before closing the half with a 38-20 advantage.

Lock Haven shot 51.5 percent from the field in the opening stanza, hitting 17 shots from the field, compared to Slippery Rock's 28.6 percent shooting and eight field goals.

The Rock chipped away at the deficit throughout the second half, narrowing the lead to 11 points at 48-37 with 9:46 to play, but the Lady Eagles answered back with a 12-0 run to take an insurmountable 60-37 lead with 4:05 to play, effectively putting the game away.

Wednesday's loss was the fifth consecutive divisional loss for SRU, dating back to the final two games of last season. The Rock's last PSAC-West win was an 80-79 win at home over Clarion Feb. 20, 2010.

Slippery Rock will return home in search of its first conference win when Mercyhurst visits Morrow Field House Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lakers enter the weekend at 10-8 overall and 2-1 in PSAC-West play.
