BEREA, Ohio –
Allegheny women's track and field opened the 2011 indoor season with a second-place finish at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational on Friday. The Gators delivered several outstanding performances while showcasing a deep cast.
Kristina Martin authored the top individual effort of the night after breaking the tape in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:37.49. It was a commanding victory for Martin, who paced a superb group attack as Katie Stancik closed in second (10:45.80). Kelly Gallagher clocked in at 10:50.74 to take fourth while Sara Mitrano contributed additional points following a sixth-place finish.
While the distance unit enjoyed a strong start to the winter slate, the sprint corps orchestrated a first-place finish in the 4x200m relay. Rebecca Lindyak ignited the victory with Dominque Billingslea, Sarah Moss, and Beth Muller rounding out the contingent. The Gators finished in 1:51.73, over one full second ahead of Baldwin-Wallace and four seconds in front of John Carroll.
“Our goal coming into today was purely to evaluate where we are as a team in our first meet after the break,” said head coach Brent Wilkerson. “We had some great efforts in all of our event areas, including an amazing performance in the 3k. Several of our runners were way ahead of our goal pace and the result reinforced our excitement for the season. We are a young and hungry team and will continue to improve as the season moves forward.”
Billingslea pieced together a strong race in the 200m, closing fifth overall in 27.85. Muller finished sixth in the race while taking eighth in the 55m dash. After squeezing into finals, Lendyak and Muller grabbed the last two scoring spots.
In the field events, All-American Lauren Butler paced Allegheny with a second-place toss in the shot put and a fifth-place finish in the weight throw. Butler's best mark of 40'8.75” in the shot fell one inch short of the winning toss provided by Notre Dame's (Ohio) Samantha Murphy. In the weight, Butler was at the high end of a 5-6-7 finish for the Blue and Gold as Tova Feinberg and Kristen Collins also scored.
The Gators, who boasted a 2-3-4 finish in the 1000m (Angela Dyer, Samantha Zink, Laura Heltman), received a pair of solid contributions in the horizontal jumps. Deedee Evans enjoyed a successful debut with a second-place finish in the triple jump (34'.75”) while Emily Norton leaped to fourth in the long jump (15'7.5”).
