OBERLIN, Ohio –
Allegheny women's track and field caught its first glimpse of the North Coast Athletic Conference on Saturday as the Gators finished fourth overall at the NCAC Relays hosted by Oberlin College. Senior Beth Muller and rookie Kristina Martin authored individual wins to pace the Blue and Gold at opposite ends of the distance spectrum.
Muller orchestrated a winning effort in the 55-meter dash after breaking the tape in 7.63. Rebecca and Dominique Billingslea tied for fourth in the race with a time of 7.75.
After closing two points outside of the NCAC Cross Country Championship, it was no surprise to see the Gators assert their muscle in the 5000m. Freshman Kristina Martin, who split 18:26.98, pulled away from the pack to earn a nine-second victory over Wittenberg's Mary Pfiefer. Kelly Gallagher crossed the line one second back of Pfiefer in 18:36.81 while senior Katie Stancik finished fourth after completing the circuit in 18:38.70.
All-American Lauren Butler continued her solid start to the new campaign by breaking up an impressive attack by Ohio Wesleyan. Butler finished second overall in the shot put (39'7”) and third in the weight throw (40'.75”) to prevent an effective sweep in those events by the Battling Bishops, who won the meet with 107 points. Oberlin (79), Kenyon (72), Allegheny (70), and Wooster (67) rounded out the top five.
“The team scores didn't reflect our effort as many of our athletes competed in two or three events for the sake of the relay scoring,” expressed head coach Brent Wilkerson. “We did have some nice performances, especially from our younger talent, and we're looking forward to seeing the progression throughout the season.”
In other action, rookie Deedee Evans leaped 32'4.25” to finish second in the triple jump despite entering the day as the top seed in the event. In a hotly contested 4x200m relay in which the top four places were seprated by less than one-half of one second, the Gators finished fourth with a time of 1:50.62.
