Harpp wins 3000-meter run at GaREAT Open

GENEVA, Ohio – Jen Harpp and Crystal Burnick took home first place and second place respectively in the 3000-meter run to lead the Slippery Rock University women's indoor track and field team at the GaREAT Collegiate Open on Saturday.

Harpp posted a time of 10:08.62 and Burnick finished in 10:09.22. Both times met the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conferences qualifying standards.

A pair of 800-meter runners yielded another set of top-five finishes as Kaela Snyder finished third in 2:18.66 while Caitlin Hancox placed fourth in 2:18.68. Emily Gusew placed 20th and qualified for the PSAC Championships with a time of 2:26.62.

SRU's final top-five finish of the day belonged to the 4x400-meter relay team of Snyder,  Tayler McCracken, Allison Smith and Amanda Seigworth. The group ran their way to a fourth-place finish in 4:00.73.

Kylie Vozar placed sixth in the high jump while Kelly Fischer and Emily Vaughn had fifth and 10th place showings in the pole vault to add to SRU's list of top-10 finishers on the day.

In the long jump competition, Jessica Ferrick recorded a jump of 4.93 meters to finish in 11th place and meet the PSAC qualifying marks. Ferrick would also compete in the triple jump and finish in 16th with a jump of 10.16 meters.

Three Rock runners recorded PSAC qualifying times in the 5000-meter run, which was held on Friday night. Becky Belding (18:58.39) and Becky Younger (19:00.84) finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th place with Sally Dugas (19:04.49) not far behind in 19th place. 

With a time of 5:23.22, Stephanie Case placed 13th in the mile while Abby Michaelian finished 20th in 5:27.45. Both times were PSAC qualifiers.  

Jade Hambrick came away with two top-20 performances on Saturday, finishing 13th in the shot put (11.62 meters) and 17th in the weight throw (13.24 meters). Other notable throwers included Cassie Carrow in the weight throw and Sandy Kakraba in the shot put. Carrow qualified for the PSAC Championships with a 12.82 meter throw and Kakraba placed 11th at 12.04 meters. Kakraba was also the top Rock athlete in the triple jump, placing 14th with a jump of 10.31 meters.  

Slippery Rock will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Mount Union Invitational in Alliance, Ohio.
