Rock's Brown earns PSAC-Western Division weekly honor

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University senior forward Maron Brown was named Monday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division "Athlete of the Week."

Brown, a native of Salisbury, Md. and product of Wicomico High School and Cecil College, averaged 25.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in two Rock wins last week, highlighted by a career-best 33 points and 15 rebounds last Saturday at Edinboro. He scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds Jan. 26 in a home win over California (Pa.).

The PSAC-West Athlete of the Week honor was the third received by Brown in 11 weeks of the competition. He was also honored Nov. 29, 2010 and Jan. 10, 2011.

Behind Brown's lead last week, The Rock moved into a tie with defending NCAA Division II national runner-up Indiana (Pa.) for second place in the division standings. Both The Rock (14-6 overall) and Crimson Hawks (13-5) own 4-2 division records and are two games off the pace being set by Mercyhurst (

The Rock closes out the first half of the division schedule Wednesday with an 8 p.m. home game against Gannon in Morrow Field House.

Brown is one of only two PSAC men's basketball student athletes who currently carry double-figure averages in both scoring and rebounding. He is the No. 7 scorer in the conference with a 16.9 points per game average and is second in rebounding at 9.1 per game.

Brown's double-digit scoring and rebounding effort last Saturday was his 12th of the season and 38th of his three-year Rock career.

Brown currently ranks 11th on SRU's career rebounding chart with 738 and 19th on the career scoring list with 1,083 points.
