ALLIANCE, Ohio –
Allegheny men's track and field demonstrated its ability to win close in a strong performance at the 2011 Jim Wuske Invitational hosted by Mount Union College. The Gators authored three individual event victories, all at the finish, while producing several solid mid-season marks in Saturday's non-scoring meet.
All-American Tony Dipre continued his march to the national stage with another signature win in the mile. Dipre broke the tape in 4:15.27 to slip past Carnegie Mellon's Nate Bussiere (4:15.40) in an electrifying finish. Fellow All-American Jeramie Parker made his season debut in the mile and split 4:17.95 en route to fourth overall.
Making his return to the active lineup for the first time since the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, senior Chris Marker did just enough to ensure another win for the Blue and Gold. Marker completed the 3000-meter run in 8:56.66, a tepid clip for the reigning 5000m All-American, but strong enough to outlast senior Matt Hussey of Roberts Wesleyan, who closed in 8:58.07.
In a slow final, senior Andrew Mahone also found a way to orchestrate a winning effort down the stretch in the 800m. Mahone finished with a time of 1:58.74, one second ahead of Brian Picciotto of Roberts Wesleyan, and three seconds in front of a six-man chase pack.
Junior Taylor Throckmorton delivered a season-best performance in the 200m, finishing third overall with a mark of 23.23. Throckmorton circled back to finish eighth in the 400m with a time of 51.77. Rookie speedster Marc Funderlich finished one step ahead of his Allegheny teammate after closing seventh behind a clip of 51.66.
The Gators also received a nice effort from senior Matt Brush and freshman Lee Swaydis, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 5000m.
