BOSTON, Mass. –
Competing in one of the most electric college meets of the indoor season, Allegheny women's track and field delivered a strong effort as the team measured itself against some of the best teams across all NCAA divisions at the 2011 BU Valentine Invitational.
All-American Lauren Butler topped the highlights after closing seventh overall in the shot put with a new indoor personal record. Butler's top mark of 40'6.25” was achieved on her fourth throw and resulted in the best finish among Division III competitors. On her second toss in the weight, Butler measured 40'11.5”, good enough to secure eighth in a highly competitive flight and 20th overall.
Allegheny capped the evening on a high note as it flashed a strong presence in the 5000-meter run. Kristina Martin authored the top individual time, crossing the line in a career-best 17:52.39 to finish second overall in the third section of the event. Senior Katie Stancik crossed fifth in the same heat, while also delivering an indoor personal record (18:09.40). Kelly Gallagher rounded out the Gators' contingent with an 11th-place time of 18:19.61.
At the other end of the distance spectrum, Beth Muller and Rebecca Lendyak continued to shoulder the load for the Blue and Gray. Both delivered their best efforts of the campaign while earning respectable finishes against a tough slate of competitors. Muller finished second in her section of the 400m in 59.02 while closing 26th out of 106 entrants. Lendyak just missed eclipsing the 60-second barrier in the open quarter, although she came back with a fourth-place section finish in the 200m (27.09). Muller split 26.74 in her 200m try while both athletes finished among the top third in a very deep field.
