BEREA, Ohio - The Slippery Rock University women's indoor track and field team continued its season on Friday with great performances at both the Akron Invitational and the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-February Meet. Five Rock athletes met the NCAA provisional qualification standards in their events while five others met the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualification standards for the first time.

As the only two SRU women competing at the Akron Invite on Friday, Jen Harpp and Crystal Burnick represented The Rock in fine fashion with NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 5000-meter run. Harpp placed second with a time of 17:17.96 while Burnick finished right behind her in third place at 17:22.07

Whitney Hendershot led Slippery Rock at the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-February Meet with a high jump of 1.70 meters. The jump was not only good enough to win the competition, but also surpass the NCAA provisional mark of 1.67 meters. Kelly Bruder and Jamie Rylands tied for second place behind Hendershot with jumps of 1.54 meters. The mark qualified Rylands for the PSAC Championships. Kylie Vozar, Dilshani Madawala and Tiffanni Downey finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at 1.48 meters.

SRU's field event athletes continued to dominate the field in the pole vault, shot put, long jump and weight throw.

Kelly Fischer and Angela Schroeder were SRU's fourth and fifth provisional qualifiers on the day as the two tied for first place at 3.50 meters. Teresa Parker and Emily Vaughn both improved on their previous PSAC qualifying marks with a pair of 3.36 meter clearances that were good enough to land the two in a tie for third place. Julia Cain and Jocelyn Cochran rounded out The Rock's pole vault competitors by finishing in a tie for fifth place (3.20 meters).

Ashley Rolick won the shot put competition with a toss of 12.68 meters, which was a season-high throw for the freshman. Jade Hambrick and Sandy Kakraba also had season-high throws of 12.51 meters and 12.07 meters respectively.

Jessica Ferrick was one of three SRU athletes to finish in the top-10 in the long jump. Ferrick won the event with a jump of 4.89 meters while Hendershot placed second (4.77 meters) and Tiffanni Downey finished seventh (4.64 meters).

Hambrick and Kakraba both met PSAC qualifying standards in the weight throw. Hambrick had a throw of 13.24 meters to place fourth and Kakraba finished in sixth place after a throw of 12.50 meters. However, Cassie Carrow would be the top Rock performer in the event with a throw of 13.71 meters, which was a season-best and good enough for a third-place finish.

SRU's success carried over into running events as well on Friday.

Amanda Seigworth, Kaela Snyder, Rachel Knapp and Allison Smith won the 4x400-meter relay after running a time of 4:05.34. SRU's second 4x400 squad of  Tayler McCracken, Chelsea Young, Christina Ransom and Jade Towns came in third place at 4:33.01.

Slippery Rock also fielded a team for the 4x200-meter relay as Christina Ransom, Jade Towns, Shanna Franceschelli and Chelsea Young posted a time of 1:51.87 to finish in third place.

Stephanie Case won the 3000-meter run and qualified for the PSAC Championships with time of 10:44.19. Abby Michaellian placed second with a PSAC qualifying time of 10:44.72. Becky Younger also gave a top-10 performance, placing fourth in 11:07.95.

Smith and Seigworth finished first and second in the 400-meter dash with times of 1:00.49 and 1:01.15. Smith's winning-time qualified her for the PSAC Championships while Seigworth's time was an improvement over her previous PSAC qualifying effort. Smith and Seigworth would also place in the top-five in the 55-meter hurdles with times at 8.59 and 8.66. Julianna Guido (1:02.46) and Elissa McCune (1:03.45) placed third and fourth, giving The Rock four of the top five runners in the 400 on Friday.

Tiffany Tedesco was the only Rock sprinter to make it out of the prelims in the 55-meter dash. Tedesco would run the finals in a PSAC qualifying time of 7.39 and place second.

Distance runner Danielle Mostachetti finished in second place in the mile run at 5:34.74.

Knapp and Tara Catone added two more top-five finishes for SRU when the pair placed second and fourth in the 200-meter dash with respective times of 27.66 and 28.44.

Select Rock athletes will continue to perform today at the Akron Invitational while the rest of the Slippery Rock women's indoor team will be back in action on Feb. 19 at the Kent State Tune-Up in Kent, Ohio.
