BEREA, Ohio - Shawn Vanderbrook and
Trevor Foley both won multiple events and
Kris Stalma met the NCAA provisional qualification standard in the 55-meter hurdles as the Slippery Rock University men's indoor track and field team had one of its best showings of the year on Friday at the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-February Meet.
Slippery Rock exited Berea, Ohio with nine total first-place finishes.
Vanderbrook would claim victory in the triple jump and long jump with marks of 13.10 meters and 6.42 meters respectively. Vanderbrook's triple jump mark was good enough to qualify him for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.
Victor Santoyo followed him in the triple jump with a jump of 12.62 meters, which was good enough for second place.
Terrace Draper (second place / 6.22 meters) and
Derick Fiedler (third place / 6.05 meters) joined Vanderbrook in the long jump to sweep the top three spots in the event.
Foley's wins came in the 200-meter dash (23.21) and the 400-meter dash in (50.98). Foley has now qualified for the PSAC Championships in both events.
In addition to Foley, five other Rock runners ranked in the top-10 in the 200-meter dash.
Vanere Maynard (23.51),
Mason McLaughlin (23.60) and
DJ Chisom (23.63), who would also win the 55-meter dash with a PSAC qualifying time of 6.55, finished in spots three, four and five.
Jonathan Boyd and
Kris Stalma placed eighth and ninth with times of 24.40 and 24.43.
Stalma carried the momentum of a top-10 finish in the in 200-meter dash into the 55-meter hurdles, coming away with a win and a NCAA provisional time of 7.71. Once again the names of Slippery Rock athletes littered the top-10 list as
Dan Hedglin (7.94) placed second,
Ethan Geisler (8.06) came in fourth,
Jonathan Boyd (8.11) finished in fifth and
Joe Spears (8.42) placed seventh. All times were PSAC Qualifying efforts.
Morgan Elliott won the 800-meter run with a PSAC qualifying time of 2:00.44.
Dan Henry finished in third place at 2:03.72.
SRU's winning ways continued into the 3000-meter run when
Jason Leonard won the event in 8:59.10 with
Travis Arrigoni just losing out to his teammate with a second-place time of 9:01.23.
Slippery Rock's final track win of the day came thanks to the 4x400-meter relay team of Geisler, Hedglin, McLaughlin and
Kevin Jewel. The group raced its way to a 3:27.70 finish. SRU's second team, which was comprised of
David Caldwell,
Andrew Greenslade,
Derick Fiedler and
Hans Lubich came in third place with a time of 3:36.68. Fiedler also tied for first place in the high jump with a jump of 1.93 meters. The height was an improvement over Fiedler's previous PSAC qualifying mark.
Eric Geddis finished in third place and qualified for the PSAC Championships in the mile run with a time of 4:30.63.
Other SRU highlights on Friday included
Joseph Kelly placing second in the weight throw with a season-best 15.77 meters and
Devin Skinner qualifying for the PSAC Championships with a throw of 13.69 meters in the same event.
Andrew Coscia also met the PSAC qualifying standard in the pole vault competition at 4.27 meters.
Select Rock athletes will continue to perform today at the Akron Invitational while the rest of the Slippery Rock men's indoor team will be back in action on Feb. 19 at the Kent State Tune-Up in Kent, Ohio.
