Daugherty places third in pole vault at KSU Tune-Up

KENT, Ohio - Cameron Daugherty recorded a season-high mark of 4.91 meters to place third in the pole vault to lead the Slippery Rock University men's indoor track and field team at the Kent State Tune-Up Saturday.

The event was SRU's final preparation for next weekend's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship meet.

Daugherty's mark on Saturday was the second time this season that the Mililani, Hawaii native has met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and the highest clearance in the PSAC this season. Ryan Camody also gave a top-10 performance in the pole vault, placing seventh with a mark of 4.61 meters. Camody improved on his previous PSAC qualifying vault of 4.57 meters.

Terrece Draper had a jump of 13.84 meters to finish in second place in the triple jump. Draper was joined in the top-10 in the triple jump by Shawn Vanderbrook and Victor Santoyo. Vanderbrook placed eighth with a jump of 13.42 meters and Santoyo finished in 10th at 13.23 meters, which qualified him for the PSAC Championships. Vanderbrook's distance was an improvement on his previous PSAC championship qualifying mark.

Other notable field athletes for Slippery Rock on Saturday included Chris Warning in the weight throw and Derick Fiedler in the high jump. Warning finished in 12th place with a throw of 17.54 meters while Fiedler placed 14th with a jump of 1.90 meters.

Kris Stalma and Dan Hedglin both made it through the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles to advance to the finals where they finished in second and ninth place respectively. Stalma ran the finals in 8.31 while Hedglin finished in 8.54. Fellow sprinter DJ Chisom placed ninth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.03.

A pair of distance runners met the PSAC qualifying standards on Saturday. Jason Leonard placed 20th in the 3000-meter run, but more importantly ran the race in a qualifying time of 8:45.39. Alex Koksal also became a PSAC qualifier with a time of 15:46.7 in the 5000-meter run.

A trio of Rock runners improved on their previous PSAC qualifying times in the 400-meter dash while another qualified for next weekend's championship meet. Kevin Jewel met the PSAC standard with a time of 50.31 to finish in 22nd place. Meanwhile Trevor Foley (21st / 50.26), Mason McLaughlin (26th / 50.79) and Vanere Maynard (19th / 50.17) all improved on their old PSAC qualifying times in the race.

Slippery Rock will now set it sights on a conference title at next weekend's PSAC Championships at Edinboro, Pa. Last season, SRU finished in sixth place.
