EDINBORO, Pa. – Kelly Bruder won the pentathlon and the Slippery Rock University women's indoor track and field team received second-place finishes from its distance medley and 4x800-meter relay teams on day one of the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Edinboro University's Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome.
Slippery Rock will enter the final day of competition in second place with 43 points, one point behind leader Shippensburg's 44 points. Kutztown (30), Indiana (Pa.) (28) and East Stroudsburg (24) round out the top five.
Bruder earned her pentathlon title by totaling 3,366 points, which easily surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 3,300 points.
The Rock's DMR team of
Caitlin Hancox,
Rachel Knapp,
Kaela Snyder and
Jen Harpp posted a time of 11:59.81 to finish in second place behind Shippensburg. Their time met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and earned Slippery Rock eight points.
Hancox, Harpp, Snyder and
Emily Gusew continued SRU's success in relay races on Saturday by placing second in the 4x800-meters with a time of 9:27.63 to earn another eight points for the Green and White.
Crystal Burnick placed fourth and improved on her previous NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5000-meter run by nearly 22 seconds on Saturday when she clocked a time of 17:00.08. Burnick's finish earned The Rock five points. The 5000 was one of the fastest races of the day as the top seven runners in the event all met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 17:32.30.
Slippery Rock claimed spots 4-6 in the pole vault for a total of 12 points in the event.
Angela Schroeder placed fourth with a clearance of 3.53 meters, which was an improvement over her previous NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3.52.
Julia Cain had a clearance of 3.37 meters for fifth place while
Kelly Fischer came in sixth (J3.37 meters).
Allison Smith and
Amanda Seigworth both advanced out of the preliminary rounds in the 60-meter hurdles and into Sunday's finals with respective finishes of third and fourth. Smith finished in 9.22 while Seigworth had a time of 9.27. Smith also qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash after recording the seventh fastest time (26.15) in the prelims.
Tiffany Tedesco made it through the prelims and will race for the 60-meter dash title on Sunday after producing the third fastest time of 7.94.
The PSAC championships will conclude Sunday with finals in all remaining events. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Slippery Rock, which has won three of the last four PSAC titles, finished in second place in 2010.
