Rock women finish second at PSAC Championships

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's indoor track and field team came in second place at the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Sunday. Slippery Rock completed the two-day competition with a total 108.5 points.

Shippensburg earned 145 points and claimed its second consecutive PSAC indoor title. Indiana (Pa.) came in third place with 72 points while Kutztown (57) and East Stroudsburg (52) rounded out the top five at the championships.

Jen Harpp and Whitney Hendershot each posted second-place finishes in their respective events to lead Slippery Rock, which also placed second at the indoor championships in 2010.

Harpp's second-place finish came in the 3000-meter run after she completed the race in 9:49.25. Crystal Burnick finished just behind Harpp in third place at 9:49.51. Harpp's and Burnick's finishes netted The Rock a combined 14 points. Shippensburg's Neely Spence won the race with a PSAC Championship record time of 9.27.7.

Hendershot recorded a mark of 1.67 meters to place second in the high jump. Kelly Bruder, who won the pentathlon on day one of the championships, had a jump of 1.57 meters to come in seventh place and earn 1.50 points.

Tiffany Tedesco, last year's 60-meter dash champion, finished in third place and earned six points in the same event this year with a time of 7.89. Fellow sprinters Allison Smith and Amanda Seigworth had strong showings in the 60-meter hurdle finals with third and fourth place finishes. Smith, who also placed eighth in the 200-meter dash finals on Sunday, clocked a time of 9.10 while Seigworth posted a time of 9.16.

Seigworth, Smith, Rachel Knapp and Kaela Snyder registered a time of 4:00.55 in the 4x400-meter relay race to finish in fourth place. Snyder also took part in the 800-meter run, placing fourth with a time of 2:15.93. Caitlin Hancox took fifth place in the 800, finishing under a second behind Snyder at 2:16.51.

Field athlete's Ashley Rolick, Jade Hambrick and Kim Stitt also produced for The Rock on Sunday as all three finished in the top six in their events to earn points. Rolick and Hambrick finished back-to-back in fifth in sixth place in the shot put. Rolick's top throw was 12.29 meters while Hambrick's was 12.28 meters. Stitt took part in the triple jump, placing sixth with a mark of 11.09 meters.

SRU athletes with NCAA provisional qualifying times will find out next week if they have been accepted into the NCAA Division II National Championships. Slippery Rock's outdoor track and field team will begin its season March 5 at the Coastal Warm-Up Meet in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
