Wert wins heptathlon, Draper sets record on day two of PSAC Championships

Brady Wert won the heptathlon with 4,922 points while Terrace Draper broke the school record in the triple jump with a mark of 14.64 meters. Chris Warning was named the PSAC Field MVP after winning the weight throw and placing second in the shot put.

EDINBORO, Pa. - Brady Wert won the heptathlon and Terrece Draper set a school record in the triple jump to lead the Slippery Rock University men's indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish Sunday at the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

As a team, Slippery Rock finished in fourth place with 99 points. Ahead of SRU was champion Shippensburg (145.50), Lock Haven (125) and East Stroudsburg (102.50). Kutztown rounded out the top five with 69 points.

Through four events Wert found himself in third place in the seven-event competition. However, he would finish the heptathlon strong by winning the 60-meter hurdles and placing second in the pole vault to help bring his winning point total to 4,922. The 4,922 points was an improvement over his previous NCAA provisional qualifying total of 4,699. Wert also competed in the high jump and finished in a tie for eighth place with teammate Derick Fiedler. Both Rock athletes had jumps of 1.86 meters

Draper placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 14.64 meters. The distance bested Preston Gibbs' previous Slippery Rock record of 14.57 meters and is also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Chris Warning followed up his championship in the weight throw Saturday with a second place finish in the shot put Sunday after a throw of 15.44 meters. Warning's performance over the weekend led to him being named the PSAC Field MVP.

Three second-place finishes highlighted Slippery Rock's running success at the PSAC Championships.

Kevin Jewel came in second in the 800-meter run after clocking a time of 1:54.80. Jason Jamieson took home fifth place in the event with a time of 1:55.52.

Kris Stalma and Dan Hedglin claimed two spots in the top-10 in the 60-meter hurdles final. Stalma finished in second place at 8.20 and Hedglin ran his way to sixth place with a time of 8.47. Fellow sprinter DJ Chisom ran the 60-meter dash in 6.97 and finished in second place. Chisom finished just seven one-hundredths of a second behind champion Chris Church of Lock Haven.

In the final race of the day, Slippery Rock's 4x400-meter relay team of Jewel, Vanere Maynard, Ethan Geisler and Trevor Foley placed third with a time of 3:21.23.

SRU athletes with NCAA provisional qualifying times will find out next week if they have been accepted into the NCAA Division II National Championships. Slippery Rock's outdoor track and field team will begin its season March 5 at the Coastal Warm-Up Meet in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
