SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The fourth-annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day event that took place last Saturday at Slippery Rock University saw record numbers of participation.

“This event has continued to grow over the last four years,” said Emily Hopkins, Slippery Rock's head women's lacrosse coach and the founder of the event at SRU. “We had a record number of participants this year thanks to all the hard work and effort that our student-athletes put into this.”

The event features a multi-sport clinic in the morning for girls between the ages of 5-12, followed by a pizza lunch, an autograph session with Slippery Rock female student-athletes and admission to The Rock women's basketball game. The entire outing is free of charge.

A record total of 52 girls participated in the event this year. Over 70 SRU female student-athletes and coaches led them through warm-ups and stretching before breaking out into individual sports clinics.

“This is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Brianne DIshong, a senior on the women's lacrosse team that has participated in all four NGWSD events at SRU. “I think a lot of people understand how much fun this is for the girls, but we have just as much fun having them here.”

Following close to three hours of sports clinics in the morning, the group was then treated to a pizza lunch at Morrow Field House before being presented with individual certificates and a color autograph book featuring photos of all the SRU women's athletics programs. After a group photo, the SRU student-athletes signed each autograph book before the start of the basketball game.

“I think that once the word gets out about how great this year's event was, we will have a full registration next year,” said Hopkins. “We want to thank all the student-athletes and coaches that were involved and mostly, we want to thank the parents for bringing their daughters to this event and making it such a success.”
