opened the 2011 outdoor track and field season with a dominant performance to lead the Slippery Rock University men's team at the Battle of the Beaches Saturday at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Warning, who is coming off the best indoor season of his career, picked up right where he left off with his performance in the outdoor opener. The senior standout recorded wins in both the hammer and discus events, posting NCAA provisional qualifying marks in each event.
His winning hammer throw of 59.87 meters shattered the Slippery Rock record of 57.53 meters, set last season by
Joel Peters. That mark is currently the best in the nation by nearly five meters and is also just shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 62.29 meters.
Warning followed that performance by posting a winning effort of 51.68 meters in the discus. That mark is just shy of the SRU record of 51.99 meters, set by Gary Aldrich in 1983 and is currently the second best performance in the nation.
Also competing and recording Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying standards this weekend were
Ryan Camody and
David Caldwell. They both cleared 4.25 meters in the pole vault to place fourth and fifth.
Andrew Greenslade hit the PSAC mark in the shot put with a toss of 13.98 meters, placing fifth in the event.
Most of the SRU team did not compete at Wilmington and will open the 2011 season next weekend at Coastal Carolina.
