LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Amy Halls scored eight goals and established a new career scoring record to lead the Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 19-10 win at St. Andrews Presbyterian College Wednesday afternoon.

Halls entered the season-opener with 108 career goals through her first two seasons, trailing school record holder April Ennis' 112 by just four. It took Halls less than 25 minutes of the 2011 season to catch and pass Ennis as she tallied five goals in the first 25 minutes of action.

Halls also led the team with six draw controls and added nine ground balls and two assists to cap a 10-point performance. She was joined in scoring multiple goals by Ariel Knox, who netted three goals and handed out one assist. Casey Quinn and Alexis Slutsky each scored two goals and handed out one assist.

Katie Roof added a goal, three draw controls and 10 ground balls, while Samantha Eddy, Kourtney Pike and Allison Richards all tallied one goal. Pike and Richards' scoring efforts gave them a goal in their first collegiate game.

Rounding out the point-scorers Wednesday for SRU was Lauren Laubach with two assists, her first collegiate points, and Emma VanDenburg and Morgan Pettit with one assist each.

Kat Elkins started her first collegiate game in goal and earned the win, recording eight saves and allowing seven goals in the process. She gave way in the second half to Ariel Gilbert with nine minutes to play. Gilbert recorded her first career save and allowed three goals to close the game.

Megan Jolly led St. Andrews (1-3) with three goals and two assists, while Kim McDaniel added three goals as well. Meghan Powell took the loss in goal, allowing 19 goals and recording 11 saves.

The Rock posted advantages of 31-25 in total shots, 17-13 in draw controls and 45-38 in ground balls. SRU was a perfect 36-of-36 on clear attempts.

Slippery Rock opened the game with a goal in the first minute when Knox found the back of the net off an assist from Halls just 48 seconds into play. Halls scored her first of the game in the third minute to put The Rock up 2-0 early.

The hosts got on the board next to cut the lead to one, but Halls sandwiched two goals around a goal from Quinn to push the lead out to 5-1.

Again St. Andrews clawed back, scoring twice to cut the lead to 5-3, but this time SRU answered with a 5-0 run to open up an advantage that the hosts could never recover from. Halls and Slutsky each scored two goals during that run, while Knox added the fifth.

All the Slippery Rock scoring in the first half came from Halls, Knox, Quinn and Slutsky. The Rock carried an 11-5 lead into the break and St. Andrews was never able to threaten in the second half.

Slippery Rock will look to improve to 2-0 on the season when it travels to Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. Saturday. First draw control is set for noon. The Rock returns home from spring break to open the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference schedule Tuesday, March 15, when No. 9 Gannon visits N. Kerr Thompson Stadium for a 7 p.m. game.
