ALBUEQURQUE, N.M. – Slippery Rock University's Brady Wert totaled 2,598 points through the first four events in the heptathlon Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Wert will enter the competition's final three events Saturday in 12th place.

Wert, who placed 10th in the heptathlon at last year's NCAA Championships, began the day by placing sixth in the 60-meter dash after running the race in 7.30 to earn 779 points. The senior would then foul twice and register a mark of just 5.73 meters in the long jump, finishing 12th in the 12 man field and falling to 11th overall with 1,308 points.

However, Wert quickly bounced back with a strong showing in the shot put. The Walworth, N.J. native placed second with a throw of 12.22 meters to tally an additional 620 points. Wert ended his day with a 10th-place showing in the high jump (1.85 meters / 670 points).

Chadron State's Brad Gamble is in first place after day one with 3,057 points.

On Saturday, Wert will aim to gain ground in the overall standings of the multi-event competition in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and the 1000-meter run.

Wert will be joined in competition Saturday by teammates Cameron Daugherty and Whitney Hendershot. Daugherty will compete in the pole vault while Hendershot will take part in the women's high jump.
