Senior left fielder Carter Haponski slapped a single to short center field with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday night to give the Slippery Rock University baseball team a 1-0 win over NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rival West Chester University.

Haponski's hit cmae one batter after freshman second baseman Lee Foxton had slapped a double into the right-center field gap. Foxton twisted an ankle scurrying back to second base on an attempted pickoff and was replaced by pinch runner Jaymee Shepherd, Shepherd scampered home from second when the ball dropped in front of a pulled-in West Chester outfield and was then briefly bobbled.

The win, SRU's second 10-inning triumph over WCU in as many meetings this spring, came on the heels of back-to-back losses and improved The Rock's season record to 7-6.

West Chester, which was unbeaten prior to its loss last Monday to SRU, suffered its fifth straight loss Friday night and saw its season record fall to 3-5.

Freshman righthander Ryan Oglesby, the winning pitcher in a relief role in last Monday's 3-2 win over West Chester, also picked up the pitching win Friday night, this time in relief of starter George Hebert.

Oglesby allowed two hits and struck out two batters in the final three innings Friday night. Hebert struck out seven, walked two and allowed only three hits in the first seven innings.

Haponski's game-winning hit was the fifth safety of the game for The Rock. Senior shortstop Adam Jury had two singles.

The Rock will close out their 11-game spring-break trip to Florida with a 9:30 a.m. single game Saturday vs. regional rival Mansfield.

SRU then turns its attention to the scheduled March 18 doubleheader vs. defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion California (Pa.) that will open the Green and White's home schedule.
