Warning leads Rock at Coastal Carolina

For the second weekend in a row, Chris Warning dominated the throwing events with three top-10 finishes.

CONWAY, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C. this weekend and finished the event with a total of 18 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks.

For the second weekend in a row, Chris Warning dominated the throwing events with three top-10 finishes.

Warning placed second in the discus with a throw of 51.61 meters and continued his strong weekend with a second-place showing in the hammer throw after a toss of 58.05 meters. He also added an eighth-place finish in the shot put at 14.02 meters.

Warning's discus mark was just .07 meters shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 51.68 that he hit last weekend. He also already owns a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 59.87 meters in the hammer throw. His shot put effort at the Coastal Carolina Invitational did meet the PSAC standard.

Joseph Kelly joined Warning in the hammer throw with a PSAC qualifying mark of 49.34 meters which was good enough to finish in sixth place.

Also taking part in field events at the Coastal Carolina Invite were pole vaulters Ryan Camody and Brent Chappell. The duo finished fourth and sixth respectively with PSAC qualifying clearances of 4.45 meters and 4.15 meters.

Rounding out The Rock's field competitors who met PSAC qualifying standards over the weekend was Terrece Draper, who recorded a mark of 3.24 meters in the triple jump to place 10th.

Leading Slippery Rock's runners on Saturday was Travis Arrigoni. Arrigoni placed third in the 5000-meter run at 15:12.11. He was joined in the 5000-meters by Michael Beegle (8th / 15:27.59) and Alex Koksal (14th / 15:44.88). All three times beat the PSAC qualifying standard.

Eric Geddis registered a time of 9:44.86 in the 3000-meter steeple race to come in fourth place. The time was nearly 14 seconds faster than the PSAC standard of 9:58.00 for the event.

With a time of 4:03.86, Dylan Klein finished in sixth place in the 1500-meter run and also qualified for the PSAC Outdoor Championships.

The top-15 of the 110-meter hurdles at the Coastal Carolina Invitational featured three Rock runners with Kris Stalma leading the group in sixth place at 14.95. Stalma was followed by Dan Hedglin in ninth place with a time of 15.15. Ethan Geisler joined Stalma and Hedglin by finishing in 13th place at 15.60. All three times easily met the PSAC qualifying mark of 15.90.

Geisler, Hedglin and Stalma also gave strong, PSAC Championship qualifying, performances in the 400-meter hurdles. Geisler placed seventh at 55.01, Hedglin finished 14th at 56.26 while Stalma came in 17th with a time of 56.90. The trio was joined by Michael Dicocco, who finished ahead of Stalma in 15th (56.56).

Other Rock athletes of note this weekend were DJ Chisom and Kevin Jewel. Chisom clocked a time of 11.04 in the 100-meter dash while Jewel finished 11th in the 400-meter run at 49.70.

Slippery Rock will be back in action March 25-26 at both the Western PA Championships and at the Raleigh Relays.
