Brown earns second all-region honor

SRU senior forward Maron Brown was named to National Association of Basketball Coaches second-team All-Atlantic Region honors Tuesday

Maron Brown
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Slippery Rock University men's basketball standout Maron Brown was named Tuesday to second-team All-Atlantic Region honors by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The all-region honor was Brown's second of the season and came one week after he was named to second-team Daktronics all-region honors by sports information directors.

Before being selected as an all-region performer, Brown earned first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division status for the second consecutive season.

Brown is the first Rock men's player to earn all-region honors since Denell Stephens and Kyle Camper were both honored in 2008-09.

A senior from Salisbury, Md., and graduate of Wicomico High School and Cecil (Md.) College, Brown led The Rock in both scoring (18.0 points per game) and rebounding (10.3 per game) in 2010-11. He ranked fifth in the PSAC in scoring and second in rebounding.

The 6-foot-5 forward recorded a school record 19 double-doubles and was the only player in the 16-team PSAC to average more than 15 points and 10 rebounds per game.

He scored 13 or more points in 25 games this season and topped the 20-point mark 11 times. He also recorded two games over 30 points, including a 32-point, 11-rebound effort against Cheyney in the PSAC semifinals.

Brown led all players in scoring at the PSAC Final Four this year, totaling 57 points and shooting 69.2 percent from the field over two games.

Brown has amassed staggering numbers over his career at Slippery Rock, which has lasted just three seasons. He ranked seventh on the school's all-time scoring ledger with 1,312 points. More impressively, he ranked third on the rebounding list with 862 career boards. He is just the second player in SRU history to score more than 1,300 points and grab more than 800 rebounds, joining Ed McFarlane (1958-62).

This winter, Brown led The Rock (21-11) to its second PSAC semifinal appearance in the last three seasons, its first PSAC championship-game appearance since 2000 and its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1991.

The Rock's season ended last Saturday night with a 117-73 opening-round loss to top-ranked and unbeaten (31-0) West Liberty University on the Hilltoppers' home court in West Virginia.
