Allegheny Athletics Announces 2011 Hall of Fame Class

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Four student-athletes and one of the College's most successful head coaches comprise Allegheny's 2011 Hall of Fame Class. The group is scheduled to be inducted as part of Reunion Weekend on Sunday, June 5, 2011 in the Tippie Alumni Center. This year's class delivered an NCAA team championship in football, and combined for 15 NCAA Championship appearances, 10 All-America honors, and nine NCAC team titles while collecting a bevy of national, regional, and conference honors in keeping Allegheny among the most successful athletic programs in Division III.

Ken O'Keefe
Football

One of the greatest coaches in Allegheny lore, Ken O'Keefe commanded the sidelines of the Gators' gridiron program from 1990-97. The 1990 NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year, O'Keefe is the all-time winningest coach in Allegheny football history with a record of 79-10-1 (.883). Capturing five North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) titles and making five trips to the NCAA Championship Tournament, O'Keefe is most famous for leading the Gators to a victory in the Stagg Bowl en route to the 1990 NCAA Division III National Championship. During his tenure, in which he was the fourth-winningest football coach across all NCAA divisions, O'Keefe coached 37 All-Americans, four Academic All-Americas, four NCAC Players of the Year, and 77 First Team All-Conference performers.

Jennifer Lorenzen '00
Softball

Another outstanding contributor in a long-list of Allegheny softball standouts, Jen Lorenzen is a fixture in the Gators' record book. Ranking first on the school's all-time charts for homeruns (27), slugging percentage (.725) and bases on balls (76), she also still currently ranks second in total bases (321), hits (187) and doubles (41). One of the most feared hitters in the region, Lorenzen earned All-East Region plaudits in her final three years of eligibility. In 1999, she batted .481 and belted nine homeruns en route to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Player of the Year honors. At the end of the season she was named to the NCAA Division III All-American team. Owner of an impressive .422 career batting average, Lorenzen earned First Team All-Conference accolades in Allegheny's first three seasons as a member of the NCAC.

Nathan Smith '01
Men's Golf

A tremendous golf talent who has continued to make national headlines beyond his college career, Nathan Smith was a sensational student-athlete with a remarkable four-year run at Allegheny. Capping his undergraduate experience with a coveted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Smith was also a two-time Academic All-America recipient. The 2001 national runner-up was also a four-time NCAA All-American and a two-time NCAA Regional Player of the Year. Smith earned medalist honors at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament on three occasions while leading the Gators to three league titles. The team earned a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships in each of his four years, including a third-place finish in 1998. Since his graduation, Smith has developed into one of the best and most recognized amateur golfers in the world. In 2010, he captured the USGA Mid-Am Championship for a record-tying third time and is set to make his third appearance at the U.S. Masters Tournament in 2011 after successfully defending the Robert T. Jones Memorial Mid-Amateur Trophy. In 2003, he became the youngest player to ever win the U.S. Mid-Amateur Open.

Penny Whiteman '91
Softball

A key cog in Allegheny softball's consistent presence as a national powerhouse, Penny Whiteman is one of just three players in the team's illustrious history to earn three NCAA Division III All-American honors. As a four-year starter in center field, Whiteman helped lead the Gators to three appearances in the NCAA Division III World Series, including a national runner-up finish in 1988. From 1989-91 she was named First Team All-Central Region while leading Allegheny to three consecutive regional titles. In 1989, she led the Gators in batting, runs, and RBI while breaking the single-season school record with 58 hits. During her senior campaign she clubbed a program-record five hits against Edinboro.

Eric Winslow '95
Football and Men's Track & Field

A tremendous dual-sport athlete, Eric Winslow was a valuable asset to both the football and track & field programs during the early 1990's. Arguably the best nose tackle in team history, Winslow paced the Gators to three North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) team titles while earning multiple All-American honors from Football Gazette and the Associated Press. Allegheny posted an overall record of 38-6 during his tenure including a 30-1 mark in conference play. The Gators advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament three times with Winslow on the roster while his career total of 40 tackles for loss is a school record. A three-time All-NCAC pick on the gridiron, opponents averaged just 2.4 yards per carry against an Allegheny front line headlined by Winslow. Selected as the NCAC Field Athlete Newcomer of the Year in track, Winslow was also a two-time NCAC champion in the javelin and earned three All-Conference honors in the shot put.

The induction ceremony will take place on campus at noon. Reservations are required for this event. If you are looking for registration information, please contact Lori Riggle in the athletic department at 814.332.3350 or lriggle@allegheny.com.
