Ettrick, Va. – The Slippery Rock University softball team saw its winning-streak extend to five games Thursday thanks to its two best offensive outings of the season as The Rock swept a pair of games at Virginia State 10-1 and 11-0. The wins improve Slippery Rock's record to 8-2.
Shaylee Ianno once again highlighted The Rock's pitching by throwing SRU's first no-hitter of the season in Slippery Rock's 11-0 win over Virginia State in game two.
SRU was led offensively on the day by
Jordan Zeunges, who drove in a total of four runs in the sweep thanks in part to a triple and her first home run of the season.
Jenna Geibel matched Zeunges' output with a home run and four RBIs of her own. For the day, Geibel went 5-for-7 to improve her batting average to .424.
Slippery Rock's 10-1 rout of Virginia State (9-10) in game one was started in the top of the first inning thanks to a three-run homer by Zeunges. Slippery Rock also saw its next run come via the long ball as Geibel belted her second home run of the season in the third inning to give SRU a 4-0 lead. The Rock's bats continued to stay hot and would tally two-runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to earn their first 10-run game of the year.
The offensive production was more than enough for Rock pitchers
Shauna Walker and
Emily Lobdell. Walker (3-2) picked up the win after giving up no hits and striking out three Virginia State batters in five innings pitched. VSU scored its lone run of the day via a pair of Rock errors when Walker was on the mound in the fourth inning. Lobdell, who has not given up a run this season, took over for Walker in the sixth inning and proceeded to record two strikeouts and surrender just two hits in the game's final two innings to preserve SRU's 10-1 win.
Joining Zeunges and Geibel with big games at the plate in game one was
Breanna Tongel and
Kirsten Brant. Tongel got the start at first base and went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and one RBI while Brant went 2-for-4, scoring two runs.
Katie Saluga,
Natalie Atkinson and
Kristin Kaminski all added RBIs as well.
Game two, which lasted just five innings, saw SRU continue to excel on the mound and at the plate in its 11-0 win.
Ianno, the reigning PSAC-West Pitcher of the Week, held Virginia State hitless and struck out nine of the 16 batters she faced on the day. The victory improved Ianno's record to 5-0 and lowered her ERA to just 0.65. Opponents are currently hitting just .151 vs. the junior.
Four different Rock batters had multi-RBI games with Geibel leading the way with three. Catchers Saluga and Kara White both drove in a pair of runs with Atkinson also joining in the fun with a two RBI-game of her own.
Kalli Wakefield made her first start of the season and batted 1-for-2, scoring three runs and drawing two walks.
Gina Brenzo continued her stellar season for Slippery Rock in the form of a 3-for-3 game that included three runs scored and one stolen base.
Slippery Rock was scheduled to play at Virginia Union tomorrow, but VU was forced to cancel the game due to multiple injuries. SRU will next take the field at home against Edinboro on Tuesday. First pitch at the SRU Softball Complex is slated for 2:30 p.m.
