ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-5 decision Thursday afternoon to No. 7 Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Tulio Field.
The Lakers (5-1,2-0 PSAC) used an 8-0 run in the middle of the game to break away from The Rock (2-2, 0-2 PSAC) and secure the win.
Slippery Rock was led by
Casey Quinn with three goals and four draw controls.
Alexis Slutsky and
Emma VanDenburg also scored for SRU.
Mercyhurst was led by Kimberly Masterton with six goals, while Kayla Minner added three goals.
Jenny Perkins earned the win in net, recording seven saves and allowing five goals.
Kat Elkins took the loss after allowing 16 goals and recording five saves.
Mercyhurst finished the game with advantages of 26-17 in shots, including 14-5 in the second half, and 17-16 in ground balls. Slippery Rock managed a 15-7 edge in draw controls.
The Lakers scored the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead after 10 minutes of play. Slippery Rock rallied to cut the deficit to one at 5-4 before the hosts scored twice more to send the game to halftime with the score at 7-4.
Mercyhurst carried the momentum from those two goals into the second half, scoring the first six goals and capping an 8-0 run with 11:45 to play. Slippery Rock would add one final goal, but could not recover from the deficit created by the Laker run.
The Rock, which has played back-to-back games against ranked teams, will travel to No. 6 West Chester Saturday for a PSAC match.
