Rock scores first win over Millersville since 1981

SRU broke open an 8-7 game by scoring the final nine goals to defeat Millersville 17-7 in PSAC action Friday. The win was the first Rock win over Millersville since 1981.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team went on a 9-0 run to close the game and hand Millersville University a 17-7 defeat Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.

The win for Slippery Rock was the first over Millersville since a 14-4 victory in 1981. Before Friday, The Rock was 0-5 against the Marauders since returning to Division II competition in 2007.

With the win, SRU snaps a three-game losing streak and improves its record to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in PSAC play. Millersville drops to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in league play.

The Rock carried an 8-6 lead into halftime and the hosts struck first in the second half to cut the lead to one, but SRU slammed the door with a 9-0 run over the final 28 minutes to come away with the 17-7 win.

Lauren Laubach had a breakout game to lead The Rock. She netted three goals and handed out one assist while also grabbing a game-high six draw controls.

Amy Halls tallied a hat trick to go along with four draw controls and Samantha Eddy added a hat trick as well to top the lead scorers.

Alexis Slutsky netted two goals and dished out one assist and Emma VanDenburg and Casey Quinn each added two goals. Katie Roof chipped in a goal and one assist, Allison Richards added one goal and Kourtney Pike was credited with one assist to cap the SRU scorers.

Kat Elkins was impressive between the posts, recording 11 saves and allowing seven goals to pick up her third win of the season.

Millersville was led by Mary Houtman and Kelsey Schmoltze with two goals each. Courtney Haggerty took the loss in goal, allowing all 17 goals and recording nine saves.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 17-7 in draw controls and 29-25 in total shots while clearing the zone successfully on 13-of-18 attempts. Millersville finished with a 36-21 edge in ground balls and was 15-of-20 in clear attempts.

After the teams traded goals to open the scoring, Slippery Rock went on a 3-0 spurt to open up a 4-1 lead early in the first half. Millersville answered twice and the teams traded goals through the rest of the half to send the game to halftime with The Rock leading 8-6.

Millersville opened the second half with a goal at the 28:14 mark to cut the lead to 8-7 before Slippery Rock shut the door and held the hosts off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half.

The Rock put together a nine-goal run to close the half, led by back-to-back goals early in the run from Halls and three consecutive goals from Eddy as the game wound down. Richards capped the game's scoring when she found the back of the net with just 16 seconds left in the game.

Slippery Rock will look to stay on the winning track with a 1 p.m. PSAC match at Shippensburg tomorrow.
