Kim Stitt earns three top-10 finishes at BVH Invite

The Slippery Rock University women's outdoor track and field team produced strong showings in two competitions Saturday. Select athletes took part in day two events at the adidas Raleigh Relays in Raleigh N.C. while the majority of the Slippery Rock team competed at the Bill Van Horne Invitational in Wheeling, W. Va.

Slippery Rock finished in seventh place at the Bill Van Horne Invite with a team score of 43 points. California (Pa.) won the championship with 119 points with Indiana (Pa.) (91 points) and Seton Hill (80 points) rounding out the top-three.

Individually, Kim Stitt led Slippery Rock by producing three top-10 finishes on the day.

The Green and White posted 11 top-10 performances in field events on the day with Lexi Arnold registering the highest finish of any Rock athlete with a second-place showing in the javelin. Arnold hit a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying mark of 37.11 meters. She was joined in the top-10 by Kim Goth and Stitt. Goth placed third with a throw of 37.09 meters while Stitt came in sixth after a mark of 34.88 meters. Goth's throw met the PSAC qualifying standard.

Stitt followed her performance in javelin with another top-10 showing in shot put. She would place third in the throwing competition with a mark of 12.30 meters. The toss was an improvement over her previous PSAC qualifying distance of 11.98 meters. Sandy Kakraba finished in 10th place with a mark of 10.50 meters.

Slippery Rock registered three more top-10 efforts in the pole vault as Angela Schroeder led the way by placing third and matching her season-best clearance of 3.35 meters. Emily Vaughn and Julia Cain tied for fifth place with clearances of 3.20 meters. Vaughn's mark was her first PSAC qualifying clearance of the season while Cain already has a mark of 3.50 meters this year.

Jessica Ferrick came in seventh place in the long jump with a leap of 4.88 meters, a mark that was .12 meters shy of meeting the PSAC qualifying standard.

Cassie Carrow and Tiffanni Downey posted the final two top-10 field performances for The Rock Saturday. Carrow placed eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 39.08 meters while Downey finished 10th in the high jump (1.45 meters).

Pacing The Rock runners at the BVH Invite was SRU's 4x100-meter relay team of Stitt, Ferrick, Kelly Bruder and Julianna Guido. The team came in fourth place with a time of 50.67.

Other notable finishes by Rock runners on the day included Emily Gusew and Kristen Koontz placing back-to-back in 11th and 12th place in the 800-meter run. Gusew clocked a time of 2:27.00 while Koontz ran a time of 2:28.01.

On day two of the Raleigh Relays, Caitlin Hancox qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 1500-meter run by posting a qualifying time of 4:45.08. Hancox's time was the best in her heat.

Also competing in the 1500-meters on in Raleigh were Stephanie Case and Stephanie Turak. Case placed 22nd with a time of 4:53.72 while Turak came in 39th at 5:02.66. Case's time was an improvement over her previous PSAC qualifying time while Turak's was just under three seconds off of her top 1500-meter time in 2011.

Jade Hambrick represented SRU in the hammer throw and placed 21st with a mark of 38.72 meters, which was less than one meter short of meeting the PSAC qualifying standard.

Slippery Rock will be back in action on Friday when it hosts California (Pa,) and Clarion at the Bill Lennox Track at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
