Coming off their championship season one year ago, the Lions had high expectations for their 2010-11 campaign. After a tough start in their season opener, the red and white quickly hit their stride and were solid throughout most of their non-conference slate.

Once conference play began, the Lions quickly found themselves in the thick of the conference standings. Ranked in the top four for most of the winter season, the Lions used clutch performances by seniors Zac Shaeffer and Matt Ashcroft to keep their winning ways alive. Unfortunately, by the end of February, the red and white could not catch a break as they slowly lost hold of their postseason dreams.

Needing to win their final game of the regular season at Messiah, the Lions looked ready to make that last push into the conference tournament. However, the host Falcons crushed Albright's playoff dreams with a stunning 63-62 upset to end the Lions' run at a second straight conference title.

In his final year with the Lions, Shaeffer etched his name into the record books. In November he became the newest member of the 1,000-point club, and on senior day became the all-time 3-point king at Albright. The Lampeter native ended his four-year career with 215 career 3-pointers. Along with Ashcroft, he is also tied for the most 3-pointers in a single season with 72, which he achieved last winter in the Lions' run to the NCAA tournament.

Also stepping to the forefront for the Lions was sophomore Cornell Mickens and freshman Kyle Jordan. The high-flying duo quickly worked their way into the Lions' rotation and made an impact every time they stepped onto the hardwood.

Albright women's basketball had another tough year in 2010-11. Looking to put last season behind them, the red and white, led by senior Jessica McGinness, had their sights set on returning to the postseason. Despite some key wins and some solid performances by a variety of players, the Lady Lions missed out on the conference tournament for the second consecutive season.

However, the red and white did not go down without a fight, pulling off some sensational victories over conference tournament teams Widener University and Alvernia University. Widener proved to be one of the biggest upsets of the year, as the Pride was dominated from start to finish in the Bollman Center.

Making this year even more special, especially for the five seniors and head coach Janice Luck, the Lady Lions just handed it to cross-town rival Alvernia on their home court. That victory, a 20-point decision, secured coach Luck her 100th career coaching win as well.

Another highlight for the Lady Lions was the fact that they got to play against Cabrini College in the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. In a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the red and white traveled to New York City and faced off against the Cavaliers. In front of their die-hard fans, the red and white battled back and forth throughout the night, but in the end fell just short of the victory.

Following the end of the season, McGinness became only the second player in program history to be named a three-time all-conference honoree. She also ended her career second all-time in scoring with an astounding 1,377 career points.

Showing a tremendous amount of promise in her freshman season was 6'0” center Meghan Boyle. The program's first D3Hoops.com Team of the Week honoree, Boyle ranked in the top five in the nation in double-doubles in the first half of the season. She eventually ended the year with 206 boards and 232 points.

Middle Atlantic Conference Swimmer of the Week:

The Albright swim team was sensational throughout their 2010-11 season. The men's team's efforts paid off in the end as they were crowned the 2011 Middle Atlantic Conference Champions. Women's swimming also had a strong season, as they closed out this year's championship meet in third place behind extremely tough Misericordia University and Widener University squads.

On the men's side, numerous records fell on their way to their fifth conference title, the first since 2005. Swimming to gold medals at this year's championship was Eric Kramer in the 100, 200, and 500 yard free. Joe Deighan recorded wins in the 1,650 free and the 200-yard IM. Adam Kurtz was also dominant throughout the meet as he swam away with three gold medals (100 fly, 200 fly, 100 back).

Senior Chris Sheerer, looking to repeat his 2010 showing, earned gold in the 200 back and the 400 yard IM. He also recorded an NCAA “B” cut to add to his already amazing resume. Along with the gold medal performances, the Lions also saw many of their teammates achieve new career times, which allowed Albright to lead throughout the championship meet.

For the women's team, sophomore Madison Hauk earned the Lady Lions' lone gold medal during the three-day meet. The Reading native swam to a first place finish in the 200 fly with her time of 2:15.33. Just like their male counterparts, the Lady Lions saw some amazing performances by their teammates, which kept the red and white in the top three.

Because of his work with both squads, head coach John Stuhltrager was named the MAC Men's Coach of the year and the MAC Co-women's coach of the year. It was the first time in his career at Albright that he received the coach of the year award for both teams.

The track and field team's 2010-11 indoor season was one for the record books. With senior jumper Justin Gewirtz and freshman sprinter Danisha Higgs leading the way, the Lions put together some impressive performances throughout the winter months.

Gewirtz not only won gold at MACs, he also set the meet record for the high jump. After that, Gewirtz went on to place second at the ECAC Championship and ninth at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship meet in Columbus Ohio. For all of his amazing performances, which were capped off by his record-setting jump of 6'9”, he became the first USTFCCCA Mideast Male Field Athlete of the Year in program history.

Also having a record-setting season was sophomore thrower Dane Canonico, who set a new program record in the shot put with his toss of 45'9”.

Higgs, a native of the Bahamas, burst onto the track this winter and quickly began shattering records. As a freshman, she broke two indoor program records in the 55-meter dash (7.34 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (25.80 seconds). She was also a member of the record-setting 4x200 relay team that included Taylor Kutz, Shannon Loos and Meghan Loos. These talented sprinters broke the school record on their way to a second-place finish at MACs with their time of 1:47.99.

After MACs, Higgs and her teammates competed at the ECAC championship meet. All four sprinters ran extremely well against some of the toughest competition on the east coast.
