Elkins stands tall in 15-10 win at Seton Hill

Kat Elkins made a career-high 21 saves and five players scored two or more goals to lead SRU to a 15-10 non-conference win at Seton Hill Thursday night.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Freshman goalie Kat Elkins made a career-high 21 saves and Slippery Rock University used a 5-0 run in the first half and a 4-0 run in the second half en route to defeating Seton Hill 15-10 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Thursday night.

With the win, Slippery Rock and Elkins improve to 5-4 overall on the season. Seton Hill drops to 2-5.

Trailing 2-1 early in the game, The Rock put together a 5-0 run, highlighted by three goals from Amy Halls, to break the game open. With the lead pushed out to 10-5 early in the second half, Katie Roof tallied two goals to highlight a 4-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Elkins stole the show with her best performance of the season, making 21 saves as Seton Hill posted a 36-28 advantage in total shots in the game.

Halls finished with a team-high three goals, while four other players tallied two goals.

Morgan Pettit found the back of the net twice and also handed out two assists, both coming off caused turnovers.

Katie Roof, Casey Quinn and Brittany Jaillet all registered two goals, while Emma VanDenburg and Ariel Knox each scored one goal and handed out two assists.

Alexis Slutsky and Allison Richards each scored one goal and Lauren Laubach# added one assist to cap the scoring.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 23-22 in ground balls and 14-13 in draw controls.

Seton Hill was led by Morgan Cain with three goals and one assist and Ashley White with two goals and four assists. Nadine Wallace made 11 saves in the losing effort.

Both teams came out of the gates slow as neither team tallied a goal through the opening five minutes of play. The Griffins broke the drought with the first goal of the game in the sixth minute, but Quinn answered back less than a minute later to notch the game at 1-1.

Seton Hill took a 2-1 lead at the 22:36 mark of the first half before Slippery Rock took control of the match.

Halls scored three goals and Slutsky and Knox each found the back of the net once to cap a 5-0 run that put The Rock up 6-2. From there, the teams traded goals to send the game to halftime with Slippery Rock leading 8-4.

Quinn and Pettit registered goals to open the second half and push the lead out to 10-4, but Seton Hill answered back with a tally with 22:35 to play to cut its deficit to 10-5.

This time it was Roof leading the charge as she scored two goals to spur a 4-0 run. Richards and Jaillet also added scores to put SRU up 14-5 with 15:55 to play.

The hosts would score five goals down the stretch, but could never recover from the deficit created by the second half run.

Slippery Rock returns home Saturday to host Shepherd in a non-conference match at noon. Saturday's game will also be the annual Lax-4-Life game for The Rock. Both teams will wear special Lax-4-Life t-shirts during the pregame warm-ups and donations will be accepted to raise money for teen suicide prevention and awareness.
